    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus four (4) years of related experience in diagnosis, assembly, repair, and maintenance of pneumatic, hydraulic, SCBA , or safety-related parts and equipment.
    • Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.


    Licenses or Certifications:
    • Valid Texas Driver License.
    • Must be able to obtain the vendor certification within eight (8) months of acceptance of position.
    Notes to Applicants
    This position requires the employee to come in every day with a positive attitude and be self motivated. This position’s main customer will be the fire fighters of the Austin Fire Department. This position will require you to work closely with other Technician and times to be on their own. This position will require you to work in all types of weather condition. There will be lifting, carrying, squatting, bending and standing. Standing will consist 50% of your daily routine. You will require to walk and carry equipment at the scene or at the stations, that weights up to 75 lbs. You will have to obtain a specific certification from the vendor within the 6 months of hire. This position does require you to have some knowledge of mechanical skills in pneumatic or hydraulic. This certification will be used on the Self-Contain Breathing Apparatus ( SCBA ) that Austin Fire Dept. and other City department use every day. This individual will be responsible for assuring all SCBA related meets the Austin Fire Dept., State and National standards. In addition, this individual will be part of the On-Call rotation for two weeks straight out of 5 weeks rotation, with assisting emergency and non-emergency calls after hours. This individual will need to have a clean driving record. Part of the job is driving to stations and other location that require our assistants in SCBA . Plus other duties comes with this position, that are require is to assist with filling bottles and performing preventative maintenance on breathing air compressors.

    Job duties will include, but not be limited to:

    • Obtain and maintain manufacturers certifications for all breathing-air apparatus, electronic components, and compressed air equipment within 6 months.
    • Adhere to manufacturers requirements for testing, repairs and preventative maintenance on all self contained breathing apparatus ensemble ( SCBA ), including cylinders, face pieces, Air Carts, RIT Paks and SKA Paks.
    • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs of SCBA face pieces, resuscitators, regulators and reducers using specialized testing equipment to calibrate to manufactures standards.
    • Test air quality, maintain and repair air compressors to ensure firefighters’ breathing cylinders contain non-contaminated air, including periodically collecting compressed resamples.
    • Schedule and maintain federal/state documentation of all flow-testing performed on regulators, dynamic breathing systems and face piece inspections, including hydrostatic testing of SCBA cylinders.
    • Conduct training for Fire Department personnel in proper field maintenance procedures, and the proper use of SCBA’s according to federal, state and manufacturer standards.
    • May perform modification or refurbishment of equipment
    • Maintain technical data on equipment to be serviced
    • Maintain inventory and monitor required parts and supplies
    • Must be able to do ‘On-Call’ rotation every 5th week


    Driving Requirement:

    This position requires a Valid Texas Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

    Preferred Experience:
    • A Scott Safety Inc. Maintenance and Overhaul Certificate.
    • Experience with Maximo asset management software.
    • Basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.

    • Live in or near Austin city limits (5-7 miles).
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    Schedules and maintains documentation of required testing of protective equipment. Performs preventative maintenance on, and repairs and tests, protective and breathing air equipment using specialized equipment to ensure safe and operational equipment. Performs electromechanical repairs to complex equipment. Adheres to manufacturer’s requirements for testing, repairs, and preventative maintenance on all protective equipment. Obtains and maintains certification for all protective equipment used) through manufacturer-approved vendors. Conducts training for personnel in proper field maintenance procedures, and the proper use of protective equipment according to safety and manufacturer’s guidelines. Conducts routine inspections. May perform modification or refurbishment of equipment. Performs welding, braising, or fabrication of some parts. Maintains technical data on equipment to be serviced. Monitors contracted maintenance services. Maintains inventory and monitors replacement orders for required parts and supplies.

    • Knowledge of protective equipment and SCBA performance standards and repair techniques.
    • Knowledge of basic operations of pneumatic compressors.
    • Knowledge of complex self-contained breathing apparatus components.
    • Knowledge of specialized high-pressure breathing air tanks.
    • Knowledge of operational function of equipment to be assembled, repaired, or maintained.
    • Knowledge of basic inventory and record keeping.
    • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in performing equipment and component repair.
    • Knowledge of Federal guidelines concerning protective equipment requirements, and if applicable, Texas Fire Commission codes, and National Fire Protection Association codes.
    • Knowledge of Federal guidelines ( OSHA , DOT , Manufacturer Specifications) concerning protective equipment requirements.
    • Skill in specialized work requiring mechanical aptitude.
    • Skill in maintaining effective working relationships with other City employees, contractors, and the general public.
    • Skill in tracking and executing periodic maintenance schedules.
    • Skill in testing and calibrating equipment or controls to close tolerance.
    • Skill in reading and following written specifications or procedures for assembly or repair.
    • Skill in recording repairs and maintenance performed.
    • Ability to diagnose and repair life support equipment.
    • Ability to use hand tools and standard and specialized measuring or testing equipment.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to train employees in complex repair and maintenance procedures.
    • Ability to participate in on-call duties after normal work hours.
