    Minimum Qualifications

    One year of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility. In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying; law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR

    One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR

    An Associate’s or higher-level degree, or 60 credit hours of college-level coursework; OR

    Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years of experience as a trade assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

    If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

    Duties Description

    Under the direction of the Park Manager or their designee, the incumbent will be involved in every aspect of park maintenance, both skilled and semi-skilled areas. The selected candidate will be responsible for:
    • Performing and supervising any work with the sawyer crews and heavy equipment operations.
    • Act independently with a minimum of direct supervision.
    • Assisting with tree-cutting and trimming activities involving the operation of chainsaws, bucket trucks, and chippers.
    • Assisting in building and repairing roads, paths, picnic tables, benches, pavilions, trails, and park equipment.
    • Assisting in other areas of park operations as needed, including loading and loading cargo from vehicles and storage, performing building and ground maintenance, and cleaning activities.
    • Providing customer service to park visitors, answering questions, providing information, and ensuring a positive experience.
    • Assisting in snow removal, including shoveling snow and operating vehicles to plow snow.
    • Assisting with small carpentry projects such as building lifeguard chairs, repairing small structures, and other building projects that may arise.
    • Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor and be able to operate equipment such as a small backhoe, tractor, and front-end loader.
    • Performing other duties as assigned.

    Additional Comments

    OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
    • Must be willing to work outdoors year-round and in all weather conditions. Daytime, evening, weekend, and holiday work is required.
    • The incumbent will be required to obtain Red Cross certification in First Aid and CPR/AED within the probationary period and must maintain certification as a term and condition of employment.
