    Distinguishing Features of the Class

    The Traffic Control division of the City of Des Moines' Engineering Department is seeking a Traffic Maintenance Chief. The Traffic Maintenance Chief, with direction from the Traffic Control Supervisor, participates in, oversees, and assigns the work of crews engaged in the manufacture, installation, and mainte­nance of parking and traffic control signs and devices, and the application of pavement markings.

    Ideal candidates for this position have:
    - People leadership skills and have served as a lead worker for a crew.
    - Experience installing and/or repairing traffic signs and devices.
    - Skill operating and maintaining pavement marking machinery.
    - Knowledge and experience working with Municipal Code.

    Performance/Written Examination: Applicants meeting the minimum requirements and the City's driving standards will be scheduled for a performance examination requiring successful operation of a LineLazer IV. Those passing the performance exam will be scheduled for a written examination. The exams are scheduled for October 29 & 30.
    Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications and who currently hold the position of Traffic Device Maintenance Worker or Senior Traffic Device Maintenance Worker, and have held for at least 6 months, are not required to complete the performance examination but are required to complete the written examination.

    Acceptable Experience and Training

    • Graduation from a High School or possession of a GED; and
    • Three years of experience involving the technical aspects of pavement marking and traffic control signage operations; or
    • Any equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Additional education may be substituted for experience at the rate of one year of experience for one year of education.


    Required Special Qualifications

    • Possession of a Class B CDL license allowing the operation of vehicles with airbrakes.
    • Candidates for this position will be required to pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen.


    Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

    • Performs all duties of the Senior Traffic Device Maintenance Worker;
    • Operates the long line paint machine as needed;
    • Oversees and participates in the layout and application of pavement markings, and other traffic control devices using various types of machinery, tools and equipment;
    • Oversees the installation and maintenance of various traffic control, parking regulation, directional, and informa­tional signs and devices;
    • Diagnoses the causes of equipment and machinery breakdowns and devises methods for repair;
    • Manages work orders, initiates utility locate requests, and inspects work in progress and on completion;
    • Maintains and enforces safety standards and regulations;
    • Orders materials, keeps cost, work progress, inventory, and time records;
    • Assigns work as needed to Traffic Device Maintenance Worker and Senior Traffic Device Maintenance Worker;
    • Performs related work as required.
