Minimum Qualifications
One year of experience* in the operation and / or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility. In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR
One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR
An Associate’s or higher-level degree, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR
Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled trades¬person.
*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
Duties Description
Under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent, the selected candidate’s duties include but are not limited to:
• Supervising lower-level staff at James Baird State Park and Golf Course, assigning work, evaluating work, and training lower-level employees, including seasonal staff.
• Acting independently with a minimum of direct supervision when completing everyday tasks.
• Performing maintenance of James Baird State Park by using hand/portable power tools and motorized equipment such as mowers, tractors, saws, tillers, trimmers, chainsaws, bucket trucks, chippers, stump grinders etc.
• Maintaining the cleanliness of the park by cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, cleaning offices, and other work areas to promote a pleasant visitor experience.
• Performing basic wintertime preventative maintenance on all park equipment.
• Assisting with all aspects of facilities and grounds maintenance including ice control and snow removal, as well as assisting with general maintenance of the golf course when needed.
• Performing all aspects of tree maintenance including evaluation, pruning, felling, and removal.
• Maintaining records including those pertaining to daily maintenance, hazardous trees, trucks, automated external defibrillators (AED), fire extinguishers, site supplies and assets, and the internal work order system.
• Working effectively with patrons and community groups to ensure routine programs and special events, including security, admissions, transportation, traffic flow, and cleanup are carried out safely.
• This position may involve medium to heavy physical labor.
Additional Comments
OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays based on operational needs and emergencies.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must obtain Game of Logging Certification (levels 1, 2, and 3) within the probationary period or at the next class offering.
