    What You'll Be Doing

    Join #TeamWake as a Public Health Nurse in the Tuberculosis Clinic!

    The Tuberculosis (TB) Clinic provides services such as chest x-rays, TB screenings for work/school, treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and for TB disease, and TB prevention education. The nurse that fills this role will need proficient assessment skills along with independent working skills.     Some of the duties and responsibilities of the TB Nurse include:
    • Assure that health policies and procedures adhere to legal and regulatory statutes and ethical standards of nursing practice, enters disease findings and lab work into the North Carolina Electronic Disease Surveillance System
    • Reporting observations and communicating with persons from all socioeconomic backgrounds
    • Assessing clients' signs and symptoms, conducting various TB tests, administering prescribed medication and teaching specific TB control measures
    • Being available for staffing emergency shelters and mass vaccination clinics as needed in response to control communicable disease

    **This position requires the nurse to be able to be fit tested for an N-95 respirator.

    Note: In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing
    • No specific experience required
    • RN - Registered Nurse - North Carolina Board of Nursing or Compact state
    • BPT - Bloodborne Pathogens Training
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation
    • AED - Automated External Defibrillator
    • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Registered Nurse with Home Health experience
    • NC Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NCEDSS) certification
    • Experience in working with electronic health records
    • Prior knowledge or experience working in a Tuberculosis Clinic
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive, productive relationships with staff as well as patients
    • Demonstrated expertise in exercising good judgement and recognizing when matters must be brought to the attention of the Tuberculosis Supervisor and Tuberculosis Physician
    • Ability to maintain composure during high stress levels and a positive attitude

    • Strong communication skills with multiple levels of education and agencies as well as act as a consultant within the Health Department clinical areas
    • Extreme flexibility to meet requirements of disease or infection identification and timely reporting to the state
    • Ability to multi-task and be flexible with work assignments to meet both the program community needs
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and keep confidential records
    • Comfortable in conversing with a very diverse population
    • Proficient in using the North Carolina Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NCEDSS)
    • Expertise in interpreting lab results, explaining treatment and being a consultant to physicians
    • Proficient in working with spreadsheets e.g. Microsoft Excel and proficient in basic computer use including Microsoft Office products, Lotus Notes, and internet web owners
    • Ability to be proactive, think independently and to take the initiative
    • Able to work within a team at a fast pace and multi-task
