Minimum Qualifications
One year of experience* in the operation and / or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility. In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR
One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR
An Associate’s or higher-level degree, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR
Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled trades¬person.
*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
Duties Description
The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Park Manager at Midway State Park or their designee. This position will be responsible for the supervision and training of the Midway State Park grounds and cleaning crew, ensuring the grounds are maintained to a highly aesthetically pleasing standard. The incumbent will perform or assist with routine grounds work including, but not limited to:
• Mowing, trimming, tree maintenance, playground maintenance, plowing, and snow removal.
• Coordinating special event setup and breakdown.
• Removing trash and other debris from buildings and surrounding areas.
• Assisting with the hazardous tree program year-round, including assessment of trees under program criteria, recommending appropriate action, proper pruning and removal of trees (including stumps), and thorough record-keeping.
• Directly supervising cleaning staff, making daily cleaning assignments based upon operational needs and checking the work of subordinates to ensure compliance with OPRHP’s quality standards.
• Performing necessary pesticide control measures on an as-needed basis in the facility buildings, cabins, picnic areas, and campgrounds; documenting those control measures per NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) requirements.
• Performing regular “hands-on” cleaning tasks and other duties as dictated by the operational needs of the facility.
• Responsible for training seasonal cleaning staff with an emphasis on efficiency, customer service, health & safety policies, and proper procedures.
• Tracking the inventory of cleaning supplies.
• Adhering to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy ensuring compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.
• This position may involve medium to heavy physical labor.

OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must be able to work a variable schedule which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess Game of Logging 1, 2, and 3 certifications or be able to obtain Game of Logging 1, 2, and 3 certifications within the probationary period as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess a NYS Pesticide Technician Certification, Category 3A, or obtain it within in the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess Hazardous Tree assessment certification or be able to obtain it within the probationary period.
• Must possess Mower Trainer certification or be able to obtain it during the probationary period.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The CSEA contracts allow for salary protection for seasonal / hourly employees who are appointed to permanent graded positions with lower hiring rates under certain circumstances.
