Interns gain valuable skills in a real-world experience outside the classroom, and the City mentors students in their career development.

Lab interns can become an integral part of the Olathe Environmental Laboratory team. You will have the opportunities for training on routine laboratory functions such as field sampling protocols, sample receipt and the laboratory information management system (LIMS) as well as analytical methods that measure parameters such as Total Chlorine Residual, Turbidity, and Total Coliform. With assistance from the Environmental Laboratory staff, this skill set may then be applied to a Geoscience project of your interest.

With consideration for your school and extracurricular activity schedule, you are expected to coordinate with the Laboratory Supervisor to establish a work schedule that can be generally kept to. You are expected to follow all Lab safety protocols following the Lab safety orientation.

Our previous lab interns have enjoyed a fun, team atmosphere and have gained valuable experience. The Olathe Environmental Laboratory is a full-scale water and wastewater Laboratory accredited by the State of Kansas. Primarily tasked with supporting Olathe Water and Wastewater operations, the Lab also works with Olathe residents and outside utilities to provide testing services. If you are interested in learning about water and wastewater testing and the requirements of the Clean and Safe Drinking Water Acts, please consider applying!
