    The Veterans - Social Worker provides assessment, outreach, case management and advocacy services to homeless veterans, both within the South Wilmington Street Center (SWSC) and outside. The intent of the position is to identify veterans and ensure that they receive the resources and benefits that they qualify to receive. Additionally, this position provides and/or advocates for the full range of services recommended by the Department of Veteran Affairs . This position provides time-limited aftercare services to guests once they move out of the SWSC. This position provides training and information to SWSC staff regarding services to homeless veterans. The Veterans Social Worker serves on a multidisciplinary team providing services including access to mental health and substance abuse assistance, job skills training, veterans and disability benefits, housing assistance, life skills and comprehensive case management support to homeless men who are working towards self-sufficiency.

    Duties include:
    • Identifies clients and provides outreach services
    • Determines eligibility for services and assists in completing screening or enrollment documents, conducts interviews and coordinates services requested
    • Work directly with clients to develop trust and discuss issues related to personal development, medical histories, employment status, child support difficulties and psychiatric problems
    • Work with clients to develop client-centered individualized service plans outlining specific goals
    • Maintain accurate records of all client interactions and activities
    • Provide follow up aftercare services and home visits once clients obtain permanent housing
    • Advise veterans of their rights, monitor benefits utilized, research current legislation and regulations and reports changes to clients
    • Maintain records and caseload reports for statistical analysis

    NOTE: Hybrid flexible hours, some evenings and weekends.

    Wake County Department of Housing and Homeless Services’ goal is to ensure that quality affordable housing is available for all Wake County residents. As the population and economy continue to grow in Wake County, the need for affordable housing development and preservation increases. Not only do more units of affordable housing need to be built, housing services must be provided to support families and individuals to access or maintain safe, decent, affordable housing. Affordable housing is also critical to preserving Wake County’s economic competitiveness by offering housing for workers at all income levels, supporting housing stability and economic opportunity for its residents and furthering Wake County’s commitment to healthy and inclusive growth. The Department’s programs include Community Revitalization, Development Financing, Rental Assistance, Homeless Services, Community Outreach, Emergency Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing. In partnership with the community, the Homeless Services team offers high quality and effective human services to persons who are experiencing homelessness or who are experiencing a housing crisis. Wake County Housing operates South Wilmington Street Center (SWSC) whose Emergency Program provides evening shelter for 234 men on a day-to-day basis, as well as more intense services through the Progressive Housing Program and the Case Management Program. In addition, SWSC will lead the County's commitment to effectively ending veteran homelessness in Wake County by the end of calendar year 2021.

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field
    • One year of job-related experience
    • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • One year or more of related experience as a Case Manager
    • Proficient in Microsoft word, excel and data entering in computer software system
    • Good written and oral communication skills
    • Three years of experience working with military or veterans services
    • Two or more years in military leadership position
    • Familiarity with SSVF and HUD VASH funding

    Emergency Service Worker Statement
