    Classification Title: Administrator I

    Department Name: Training Ship Golden Bear

    Time Base: Full-time, Temporary

    Pay Plan: 12 month (Position is paid on a monthly basis and the expected duration is approximately 65 days)

    Bargaining Unit: M80 (Management/MPP)

    Employment Type: MPP - this position is part of the California State University Management Personnel Plan (MPP). No tenure or permanent status can be achieved within the MPP.

    Salary Range:
    • Hiring salary is between $7,500 - $8,000 per month commensurate with education, experience and licensure.
    • CSU Salary Range: $3,938 - $11,703 per month.

    Position Summary:

    The California State University Maritime Academy seeks applicants for temporary positions to serve as Licensed Watch Officer - Deck for the 2025 summer sea term. Applicants expecting to be considered for this position must complete their online application and submit requested materials. This position will remain open until filled.     About the California State University Maritime Academy:

    Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

    Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard, and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

    Major Responsibilities:
    • The individual in the Licensed Watch Officer - Deck position will be responsible for standing watches.
    • Other duties will include drills, and standing in port watches.
    • Managing the work of the assistant watch officers.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Current Unlimited U.S. Coast Guard license
    • Current STCW endorsement including an active medical certificate valid for STCW
    • Valid TWIC card
    • Valid Passport

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Senior deck license with significant sea experience

    Special Conditions:

    Physical, Mental and Environmental Conditions:
    • Worksite aboard the training ship requires climbing up and down ship ladders and gangways; lifting and carrying material from pier to training ship; and occasional work in excess heat, cold, dampness or dry atmospheric conditions.
    • All mariners should be capable of living and working in cramped spaces on rolling vessels, maintaining balance on a moving deck, rapidly donning an exposure suit, stepping over doorsills of 24 inches in height, opening and closing watertight doors that may weigh up to 56 pounds, pulling heavy objects, up to 50 lbs. in weight, distances of up to 400 feet, climbing steep stairs or vertical ladders without assistance, participating in firefighting and lifesaving efforts, including wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and lifting/controlling fully charged fire hoses. Extended workdays are common.
    • Adherence to uniform and grooming standards is mandatory.

    Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, drug screening, physical and fingerprinting) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
