    Position Description

    The City of Tacoma Environmental Services Solid Waste Management Division is hiring for a Solid Waste Mechanic. This position includes various skilled maintenance, preventive maintenance and repair duties for the garbage processing, and solid waste compacting facilities. This includes performing complex maintenance and repair work independently or with assistance of assigned personnel. Incumbents may also be required to provide technical work, direction and guidance to assigned maintenance workers.

    Qualifications

    An equivalent combination to: Graduation from high school including training in the maintenance trades and two (2) years' experience in the operations, maintenance and repair of mechanical and hydraulic systems. Experience with solid waste compacting, garbage processing or related equipment preferred.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Valid Washington State Driver’s License at time of appointment, with maintenance thereafter
    • Obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within probationary period, with maintenance thereafter.
    • Completion of Welder I Training or equivalent welding training program within 12 months of appointment into the classification
    • Obtain man-lift and forklift training certification; CPR and First Aid training within probationary period, with maintenance thereafter
    • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including a respirator and heavy gloves


    Knowledge & Skills

    • Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in solid waste compacting equipment maintenance, repair, removal and installation.
    • Safety techniques, testing methods and procedures associated with working with dangerous or hazardous gases, solid waste and confined spaces.
    • Basic principles and procedures of mechanical, plumbing and electrical repair.
    • Basic principles of the skilled maintenance trades.
    • Safety techniques, testing methods and procedures associated with working with dangerous or hazardous gases, solid waste and confined spaces.
    • Record-keeping techniques.
    • Perform skilled maintenance and repair work for recovery and transfer center and solid waste compacting facilities using a variety of hand and power tools and test equipment.
    • Read and interpret meters.
    • Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.
    • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
    • Perform heavy manual labor.
    • Learn to apply safety and health procedures related to recovery and transfer center and solid waste compacting facilities.
    • Meet schedules and time lines.
    • Operate forklifts, man lifts, City vehicles and other equipment.
    • Inspect equipment, diagnose problems and correct as needed.


    Selection Process & Supplemental Information

Applicants must pass this evaluation to be placed on the eligible list for hiring consideration.

    Appointment is subject to passing a background check and a pre-employment medical exam and drug screen. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between The City of Tacoma and the Local 160. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

    Retirement: All employees of the City, except members of the Police and Fire services, Tacoma Rail and certain project employees, are included in the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System.     Other Employment Information

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
