    Position Information

    Join the Sonoma County Event Center at the Fairgrounds!

    We are now recruiting for a Fairgrounds Maintenance Worker,

    with a starting salary up to $32.37/hour ($67,560/year) and a competitive total compensation package!*

    Do you have:
    • A valid Class C driver's license
    • The ability to work a Thursday through Monday schedule, which may include evenings and holidays
    • Experience working on event set-up, maintenance, janitorial, and/or construction projects

    The Fairgrounds is a unique, year-round venue with more than 100,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor facilities and equestrian arenas. Showcasing the annual County Fair, the grounds are the pride of Sonoma County and preferred venue for many community celebrations. Fairgrounds Maintenance Workers complete a variety of unskilled and semiskilled light and heavy tasks to prepare and maintain the buildings and grounds for upcoming events. Responsibilities may include event set-up, facility preparation, janitorial duties, and grounds keeping activities. The Fairgrounds Maintenance team works Monday through Friday or Thursday through Monday, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm; and may work evenings, holidays, and outside in sometimes unfavorable weather conditions.

    The ideal candidate will have strong communication and interpersonal skills and enjoy the fast-paced environment of an event venue. They will also possess many of the following:

    • Experience with event operations at a fairgrounds or large event venue including the setting and strike of chairs, tables, pipe and drape, and stages
    • The ability to professionally and effectively interact with management, co-workers, contractors, and the public
    • Experience operating heavy equipment, including forklifts, scissor lifts, and boom lifts
    • The ability to effectively apply problem-solving techniques
    • The ability to read, understand, and execute written instructions, diagrams, layout maps, shop drawings and blueprints, work orders, and operation plans
    • Knowledge and experience in preparing footing for riding arenas or rodeo grounds is highly desirable

    The Sonoma County Fairgrounds is currently recruiting for multiple Fairgrounds Maintenance Worker positions. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list.     Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience: There is no formal education or experience requirement for this class; however, applicants must be able to read and write English and perform arithmetic calculations at a level appropriate for successful job performance.

    License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Knowledge of: basic safety practices commonly used in maintenance work.

    Some knowledge of: basic tools, materials and equipment used.

    Ability to: demonstrate physical strength, agility and endurance in performing light and heavy unskilled manual tasks for extended periods and in unfavorable weather conditions; understand and follow oral and written direction; work harmoniously with other employees; learn to and operate equipment and machine tools; work nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

    Responses to supplemental questions will be scored using position-specific criteria.     The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

    An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

    • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.
    Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination which evaluates the education, training, experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, and other qualifications that you demonstrate in your application and/or response to the supplemental questionnaire. Please be aware that resumes and cover letters are not typically evaluated in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as the number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.
