    Reporting to the Provost, the Dean serves as the senior administrator and is the principal champion for vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the College of Information, Data, and Society (IDS). The dean must work effectively with departments, faculty, staff, students, and other administrators to define, articulate, and implement the College’s mission and educational philosophy, assuring that they are responsive to the diversity of the University’s students and the State of California. The Dean is responsible for coordination of the College’s developing and implementing a diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence strategy for the college that is integrated across all areas of the college’s work in: strategic planning, student success, enrollment management, and academic program planning, assessment of curriculum and instruction assessment and development, recruitment and evaluation of faculty and staff recruitment and retention strategies, professional development, budgeting and management of funds, and the allocation and use of facilities. The Dean must also set out a vision and strategy for the future of information science, data analytics, and librarianship education as well as foster larger interdisciplinary efforts on campus for the future of the region and beyond, developing strategies to meet the rapidly changing educational needs of students and communities.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Provides visionary leadership to faculty, staff, and administrators to foster a culture of inclusive and academic excellence of students and faculty
    • Oversees strategic planning for the college and provides leadership to faculty and staff, encouraging a sense of academic community and the vision, commitment, and integrity necessary to define and accomplish College and University goals
    • Experience building innovative degree programs that provide a diversity of options for students across information science, library science, and data analytics in both online and in-person/hybrid modalities
    • Articulates and advocates the role of the college on campus and in the Silicon Valley community
    • Contributes to creating an academic community in which a diverse population can learn and work in an atmosphere of tolerance, civility and respect for each individual
    • Develops initiatives and changes to improve quality and services for the college
    • Leads the college by supporting academic governance and collaborative decision-making, demonstrating effectiveness in a collective bargaining environment
    • Mediates conflicts among departments and faculty
    • Updates and manages facilities and infrastructure to support College and University goals for teaching and research
    • Develops partnerships and collaborations with various stakeholders across the College, University and broader community to achieve excellence in the College and University's teaching, research, and service mission
    • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with university policies and applicable laws
    • Establishes effective plans and supports to improve graduation rates and reduce gaps for the college’s diverse learners, creating programs that help close the achievement gap between groups
    • Champions effective use of innovative teaching, internships, service learning, and novel pedagogies that promote greater student engagement, learning, retention, graduation, and professional success
    • Create a strategic plan for philanthropy in the college that establishes clear fundraising priorities in collaboration with the provost and vice president of advancement
    • Provides direction and support to departments to assure goals, programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and contribute to College and University goals and strategies
    • Oversees college recruitment planning for faculty, staff, and administrators and collaborates with departments, the Office for Faculty Success, University Personnel-Faculty Services, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Provost in recruitment, retention, promotion, and tenure procedures
    • Reviews academic teaching, research, and service of all faculty
    • Addresses complaints and resolves problems amongst students, faculty, and staff in collaboration with other campus leaders


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Demonstrable evidence that they are an innovative, visionary, and entrepreneurial leader, with high personal integrity
    • Knowledge of and experience with integrating frameworks of diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence into the everyday fabric of an organization’s culture and practices
    • An understanding how rapid changes in technologies - e.g., artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, human-computer interaction, UI/UX and design - are intersecting with the changing world of information and data literacy and use
    • Demonstrated skill and capacity in effective fundraising and ability to write successful grants
    • Exemplary analytical, strategic, and critical thinking skills with a strong emphasis on both data-driven decision making and innovative thinking approaches with demonstrable outcomes
    • Ability to communicate accurate information and informed opinions in writing or orally to varied audiences
    • Ability to implement solid, proven effective budgeting and management skills
    • Ability to work collegially with university leadership and the college faculty and staff within a shared governance structure
    • Ability to promote academic excellence and innovation, including the use of technology to address equity gaps
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills, appropriate for interacting with a diverse range of individuals and settings
    • Demonstrate ability to work effectively in culturally diverse settings, while understanding how to build programming using equity-based approaches that foster inclusive excellence


    Required Qualifications
    • A terminal degree in an information, library, and/or data science discipline or equivalent
    • Demonstrated record of teaching, research, service, and/or experience meriting appointment as a tenured professor in the college
    • Three or more years of direct leadership experience at the department chair, director, associate dean or dean level
    • Some leadership experience at the department chair, director, associate dean or dean level, experience with accreditation, and/or experience working in a collective bargaining environment
    • Demonstrated ability to develop a culture of philanthropy


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Doctoral degree in information, library, and/or data science or related field
    • Five or more years of direct leadership experience at the department chair, director, associate dean or dean level


    Compensation

    Classification: Administrator IV
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $18,750/month - $20,000/month

    CSU Salary Range: $9,625/month - $30,896/month

    The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
