  • Job Description

    Minimum Qualifications

    Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate’s degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
    Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.
    1. Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.
    2. Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.

    If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

    Duties Description

    Duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Diagnoses the cause of breakdowns and for performing major and minor mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs on self-propelled and non-self-propelled mowers, tractors, attachments, vehicles and equipment;
    • Works on heavy and light trucks, bulldozers, excavators, compressors, rollers, various mowing equipment, and chain saws and other small-engine equipment;
    • Performs routine preventive maintenance and vehicle safety inspections on a routine basis;
    • Performs NYS vehicle inspections;
    • Supervises and trains lower level or seasonal garage employees to ensure that instructions have been followed and the quality of work is satisfactory;
    • Conducts inspections of facilities/equipment and makes recommendations for repairs or replacements;
    • Operates light trucks, passenger vehicles, tractors and other equipment as required;
    • Experience on gas or diesel engines, hydraulic systems, reel and blade maintenance, spray rig pumps and irrigation pumps preferred.

    Additional Comments

    OPERATING NEEDS:
    • May be expected to work weekends and various shifts, holidays, and special events. Specific schedule will be discussed at the time of interview.
    • Selected candidate must possess a New York State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License by date of appointment and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
    • Possession of a Class A or B CDL is preferred.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid certification as a NYS Department of Motor Vehicle Inspector as a term and condition of employment.
    • Ability to prepare job estimates, maintain inventory and stock control, and order shop supplies.
    • Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
    • Read plans and specifications.
    • Follow appropriate safety standards.
    • May perform duties related to the replacement of rusted or damaged body parts by welding, metal fabrication, and plasma cutting.

    The hiring rate listed combines the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($48,956) with the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400). Similarly, the job rate posted is a combination of the statutory job rate ($59,757) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400).
