Job Description

The Detention Specialist is responsible for monitoring inmate and staff safety within the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Detention Facility, and the Jefferson County Government Center. Control inmate and staff movements in and out of the facility. Resolve inmate conflicts. Inspects facility for potential safety hazards. Enforce policies and regulations. Document daily activity. Complete logs and reports. Track facility inventory. Verify inmate information. Process mail. Monitor alarms. Employee is subject to the hazards of direct contact with jail inmates.

Description:

  • Starting pay: $23.63-$27.39 Top out pay: $35.44
  • Monitor facility safety by controlling inmate and staff movements through facility. Monitor staff safety in housing areas and common hallways. Supervise inmates in housing area. Communicate with staff using handheld devices. Resolve inmate conflicts. Foresee potential safety hazards. Ensure actions adhere to policy. Initiate and coordinate emergency response by employees and other emergency response agencies. Monitor internal and external facilities through closed circuit television (CCTV).
  • Perform administrative tasks by reviewing and completing daily activity logs. Verify inmate information in computer system. Monitor life safety alarm systems within the detention facility and government center. Write criminal and incident reports. Report, document, and follow up on identified deficiencies.
  • Monitor property transfers and exchanges for contraband.
  • Process all incoming US mail, digital mail, and e-messaging systems.
  • Responsible for distribution and collection of all keys within the facility.
  • Monitor phones and radios of deputies on special assignments outside the facility.
  • Track inventory of facility supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education:
GED, High School Diploma
Experience:
Work Experience: Minimum one year
