A Code Compliance Officer position is available with the City of Fort Worth Code Compliance Department - Neighborhood Investigations Division. The Code Compliance Department maintains Fort Worth’s status as a clean, livable city by ensuring property complies with rules set by City Council. Code Compliance Officers work within defined boundaries and serves as first responders responsible for determining if an ordinance violation is present. The Neighborhood Investigations Division consists of the neighborhood Code Officers who investigate violations such as high grass, open and vacant structures, junk vehicles, accumulation of debris, contaminated bulk waste and zoning issues.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, or GED supplemented by specialized training in code enforcement, building codes, and zoning regulations or related field.
  • One (1) year of general experience in building or construction trades, zoning, or enforcement of local, state and federal laws or regulations.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a State of Texas Code Enforcement Officer Certificate within eighteen (18) months of the date of hire.
  • Candidate selected for hire must pass Pre-Employment Drug Screen, Physical and Criminal Background check.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidates who have higher levels of education.
  • Customer service experience handling escalated customer complaints and dispute resolution experience.
  • Experience maintaining an active case load and achieving established quantitative performance benchmarks.
  • Experience working within a ‘team concept’ work environment.
  • Public presentation experience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office to include: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Bilingual - ability to speak, write, and understand Spanish.

The Code Compliance Officer job responsibilities include:
  • Inspects single family homes, apartment buildings, businesses, vacant lots and other properties; inspect environmental hazards; ensure compliance with applicable zoning and environmental health codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Enforce building codes and zoning regulations for residential and commercial properties.
  • Perform complaint investigations by responding to alleged violations; interviews complainant and witnesses, takes photographs of violations, document activities and update records.
  • Maintains records and reports of inspections and surveillance activities; prepares reports as required.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information; and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Assists in preparing case reports for court or administrative proceedings; testifies in court and at administrative proceedings as necessary.
  • Participates in joint enforcement efforts with the Health Division and Fort Worth Police Department to effectively manage difficult cases that require multiple disciplines.

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils and workspace restrictions.

Physical Demand

Medium work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
