We are seeking a skilled Equipment Mechanic I/II with a strong automotive mechanical background to join our team in managing a diverse fleet of 70 vehicles and equipment used throughout the City. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, able to effectively prioritize tasks, and work seamlessly within a small, collaborative team. Equipment Mechanic I:
Under general supervision, the Equipment Mechanic I performs a variety of skilled manual tasks, and work as required for fleet maintenance and repair of city-owned and leased vehicles. This is the entry-level class in the Equipment Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Equipment Mechanic II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of discretion and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as required of the Equipment Mechanic II level.

Equipment Mechanic II:
This is the full journey-level class within the Equipment Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from Equipment Mechanic I by the assignment of a full range of duties. Employees at the Equipment Mechanic II level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

The city may hire employees into the Equipment Mechanic I or the Equipment Mechanic II classification.

Examples of Duties

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical deficiencies on a variety of light and heavy equipment, including automobiles, light-, medium-, and heavy-duty trucks/tractors, and police cars. Operates a variety of equipment and tools required for the maintenance of city vehicles and equipment. Performs minor, as well as occasional difficult and complex, repair work as well as routine work. Performs general maintenance and repair of small gasoline engine tools and equipment. Performs general maintenance checks of city stand-by generators. Repairs and rebuilds engines, chassis, electrical, hydraulic, air conditioning, and emission control systems. Installs special equipment on trucks, bodies, compressors, and winches.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Equipment Mechanic I:EXPERIENCE:
  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in equipment maintenance and repair work.
  • Familiarity with automotive industry standards in relation to maintenance and repair of vehicles.
  • Good computer skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with maintenance work order systems a plus.
EDUCATION:
  • Equivalent to graduation from High School.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possession of a valid California Class B Driver License with hazardous materials and tanker endorsements within six months of appointment.
Equipment Mechanic II:
EXPERIENCE:
  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in equipment maintenance and repair work with 2 years working for the city of Los Altos within the Equipment Mechanic 1 classification with satisfactory annual performance evaluations.
  • Familiarity with automotive industry standards in relation to maintenance and repair of vehicles.
  • Good computer skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with maintenance work order systems a plus.
EDUCATION:
  • Equivalent to graduation from High School
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possession of a valid California Class B Driver License with hazardous materials and tanker endorsements within six months of appointment.
  • Must possess at least four of the following certifications at time of appointment:
    • ASCE - Engine Repair
    • ASCE - Automatic Transmission/Transaxle
    • ASCE - Manual Drive Train & Axles
    • ASCE - Suspension & Steering
    • ASCE - Brakes
    • ASCE - Electrical/Electronic Systems
    • ASCE - Heating & Air Conditioning
    • ASCE - Engine Performance
    • ASCE - Light Vehicle Diesel Engines
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas, diesel, hybrid, electric, and alternative fuel equipment; operating and repair characteristics of the entire range of city-owned vehicles, and light and heavy equipment; operation and care of internal combustion engines, hydraulics, and electrical components; use of a variety of hand and power tools, and related equipment maintenance; advanced equipment maintenance techniques; and safe work practices. Computer control systems, high-/ low-voltage electrical systems, high-/low-pressure water pumps, and vehicle air conditioning systems.

SKILL AND ABILITY TO:
Inspect gas, diesel, hybrid, electric, and alternative fuel equipment, hydraulic and electrical systems to locate difficulties; perform minor and major work on mechanical equipment; maintain equipment records; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties. Perform journey-level skilled light- and heavy-equipment mechanic work; read and understand electrical and mechanical system schematic diagrams related to city-owned equipment; and repair emission control systems.
