GOLF SERVICE ASSISTANT (PART-TIME)

The City of Sunnyvale is looking to fill the Golf Service Assistant position with a team member that believes the impossible is possible. Sunnyvale Golf Course is a par 70 regulation 18-hole course with numerous bunkers, dog legs and water holes. Sunnyvale is a well-manicured test of the player's skill stretching out to 6,255 yards. Sunken Gardens Golf Course is a 9-hole, 1,502 yard executive course. Sunken Gardens is ideal for the beginner golfer with ample practice facilities and shorter length holes.

The Golf Service Assistant is responsible for performing customer service and cash handling tasks in accordance with standard procedures and following specific instructions from the supervising staff. The Golf Service Assistant classification is distinguished from the higher classification of Assistant Golf Professional in that the latter has increased level of responsibility, such as explaining and enforcing rules of the game of golf, equipment repair, golf starting, and event coordination.

Under direct supervision, performs general customer service tasks related to golf services, such as cash handling, placing reservations for golf tee times, assisting in event coordination, handling merchandise sales and performs other duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Golf Service Assistant is responsible for performing customer service and cash handling tasks in accordance with standard procedures and following specific instructions from the supervising staff. The Golf Service Assistant classification is distinguished from the higher classification of Assistant Golf Professional in that the latter has increased level of responsibility, such as explaining and enforcing rules of the game of golf, equipment repair, golf starting, and event coordination.

Essential Job Functions

(May include, but are not limited to, the following):
  • Provide excellent customer service by representing the City in a professional manner.
  • Organize customers into player groups as they arrive, pay, and begin their activities.
  • Handle customer transactions, including completion of appropriate paperwork.
  • Accept golf tee time reservations in person and by telephone in an accurate and professional manner.
  • Assist with timely opening, closing, and securing facilities, such as pro shop, restrooms, cart building, and security gates.
  • Move golf carts from the storage facility to the customer staging area and return golf carts to the storage facility after use.
  • Receive merchandise and double-check for accuracy; price and display merchandise for sale; sell merchandise to customers.
  • Follow cash handling guidelines to accurately complete financial transactions.
  • Use computerized software to ensure all customers have paid the required fees.
  • Clean golf facilities to provide for neat, safe, and secure workplace.
  • Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.
  • Enforce course rules in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Attend staff meetings and employee training.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when operating assigned equipment and using a computer screen. Acute hearing is required in both the field and the office. The ability to lift, carry and push equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this indoor/outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, heat, and cold. The incumbent may be exposed to hazardous materials, such as golf cart battery acid. This position will also drive motorized vehicles, such as golf carts. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

HOURS

The Golf Service Assistant, Part Time classification is scheduled for 30 hours per week from March through October. During months with less daylight, November through February, the scheduled hours are reduced to 26 hours/week.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

A high school diploma or GED equivalent, AND Six months of customer service experience.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Basic Knowledge of:
  • Customer service techniques and practices.
  • Telephone etiquette.
  • Reservation and scheduling practices.
  • Cash handling procedures.
  • Basic math principles.
  • The game of golf.
  • General golf cart operation,
  • Basic office skills, including computer operation.

Ability to:
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Accurately handle cash and complete associated paperwork with speed and accuracy.
  • Perform basic functions on a computer.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Enforce appropriate rules and policies in a tactful manner.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous attitude.
  • Exercise good judgment and make appropriate decisions involving personal safety and the safety of others.
  • Make sound decisions within established guidelines.
  • Perform basic math calculations.
  • Learn more complex practices, principles, techniques, and regulations, pertaining to assigned duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Work independently and as a member of a team.

Willingness to:
  • Work variable hours and days, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Licenses/Certificates:

Possession and continued maintenance of a California class C driver's license and a safe driving record or the ability to provide alternate transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.

EXAM PROCESS
Applications will be competitively screened based on the minimum qualifications of this position. Based upon a review of the application materials, the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the oral examination process scheduled for Friday, October 18
, 2024 . (Note: The examination process may be changed as deemed necessary by the Director of Human Resources).

SELECTION PROCESS
Those candidates that receive a passing score on the examination will be placed on an eligibility list for up to one year, in accordance with the City's Civil Service Rules and Administrative Policies.
Top candidates on the eligibility list will be invited to participate in an in-person selection interview with the Public Works Department tentatively scheduled on Thursday, October 24, 2024. Any candidate that is selected by the hiring department will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment process, which may consist of a background history check, as well as a medical exam(s) administered by a City selected physician(s) before hire. Prior to starting work, all newly-hired employees will be fingerprinted to check conviction history. A conviction history will not necessarily disqualify an applicant from appointment; however, failure to disclose conviction history will result in refusal of employment or termination. Positions which are covered by the Department of Transportation regulations are required to submit to a pre-employment drug test and to random drug and alcohol testing.
