Examples Of DutiesThis position monitors District vehicle equipment, parts, and supplies; troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs District vehicles and small engine equipment in shop and field environment; performs preventive and routine maintenance on inventory of District vehicles including light duty vans, medium and heavy diesel engine trucks; promotes quality service work environment and demonstrates quality customer service.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Schedules daily operations based on preventive maintenance schedule and emergency call-outs of District vehicles; responds to field service calls.
2. Prepares recommendations and corrective course of action consulting with lead person, as necessary.
3. Performs routine maintenance and safety checks; makes repairs and adjustments; installs, replaces, rebuilds, or repairs the parts and/or equipment in a timely manner according to specifications.
4. Maintains vehicle history for each District vehicle and small engine repair; determines vehicle status using onboard computer system, service documents, and product improvement and support programs.
5. Performs general housekeeping duties; maintains a clean and safe environment; secures all tools, equipment, and machinery at end of shift; completes all required documents.
6. Monitors and contains cost by using warranties, evaluating the service, and parts options.
OTHER JOB DUTIES 1. Maintains and updates knowledge and skills necessary for success in the position by participating in training activities, meetings, seminars, and workshops, as assigned
2. Performs related duties, as assigned, on a temporary basis
3. Ensures trades have satisfactory transportation to complete essential duties
4. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the work.
CONDITIONS May be required to make emergency repairs at hours other than normally scheduled; may be required to work outside of regular work hours; exposure to loud noises and machinery with moving parts; may be required to lift heavy objects; may be required to work outdoors in inclement weather and at heights; may work in confined areas; travel to District sites, required; may be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and more (note KSA below), bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, climb, and/or be mobile.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience High school graduation or equivalent and three years’ experience as a full-time mechanic with gas, diesel, propane vehicles, air brakes, and mechanical systems servicing both diesel and gasoline vehicles; engine and chassis diagnostic software experience, preferred; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.
Licenses/Special Requirements
Valid Washington State driver’s license.
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsement, required; class A with air
brakes, preferred.
Required to pass a US DOT physical.
Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/Sexual Misconduct clearance.
Allowable Substitution
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by the Human Resources Department for comparability.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of routine maintenance, repair, and safety procedures for vehicles.
Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in vehicle maintenance and repair.
Knowledge of proper safety precautions and procedures
Knowledge of vehicle electrical wiring system.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and local standards and codes relating to vehicle maintenance.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of all tools and equipment for vehicle maintenance.
Skill with word processing and spreadsheet, software.
Skill in obtaining, clarifying, and exchanging information.
Skill in decision-making and problem solving.
Ability to follow technical instructions, to plan, organize, and order materials.
Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments on transportation vehicles.
Ability to lift up to 70 pounds using proper equipment and safety precautions.
Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
Ability to work under pressure and meet established deadlines.
Ability to organize, prioritize, and maintain good follow-through procedures.
Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
