As a Code Inspector, you'll be a key member of that team, making a difference each day with the work you do.
In this role, you'll help enforce Scottsdale's City Code by investigating short-term rentals, conducting field inspections, and identifying issues related to property maintenance, public nuisances, zoning, signs, housing, and other health and safety violations. This position may have a flexible schedule that could include working days, evenings, nights, weekends, rotating shifts, and on-call duties.? The ideal candidate is prepared to work with the public daily, using knowledge and expertise to help Scottsdale thrive in the years ahead.

Anticipated starting salary may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity. The midpoint of this range is $33.22


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
  • Two years of public contact experience.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.


Essential Functions

Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:

  • Responds, orally and/or in writing, to complaints from the public.
  • Performs commercial and residential inspections, proactive and complaint-initiated field inspections, preventative enforcement, and other inspections; determines compliance with municipal codes.
  • Investigates possible violations of City property maintenance, nuisance and zoning codes; identifies violations and properties not in compliance and follows up with notices and citations to ensure compliance with city codes. Works with citizens, property and business owners to correct violations.
  • Reads and visually interprets site issues quickly and accurately in order to measure compliance.
  • Researches case histories, approval documents, approved construction documents, property ownership records, sales tax licenses, aerial photos, microfiche records, utility records and other related documents as necessary.
  • Provides information to the public, other City departments, and interested parties regarding zoning, other regulations, and related departmental programs and policies.
  • Prepares reports, documents inspections, issues notices or letters, photographs property conditions and maintains required records.
  • Operates a city vehicle to respond to inquiries at various job sites throughout the City.
