Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is nationally recognized and registered with the United States Department of Labor. This one-year (2000 hour) program will provide in-depth training (both on the job and classroom) to prepare participants for a fully operational Traffic Signal Technician position. Apprentices will be assigned to a seasoned professional as a mentor for the duration of the program. Upon successful completion, participants will receive national certification. An Apprentice Traffic Signal Technician maintains, programs, repairs, installs and tests traffic signal systems, communications, and control devices citywide. Apprentice T raffic Signal Technician Program offers one year (2000 hours) of paid mentorship, classroom and hands-on training to prepare you for a meaningful career in public service. Apprentices will earn their Commercial Driver’s License and certifications to qualify for a career as a Traffic Signal Technician I. Candidates will be eligible for a pay increase upon successful completion of 1000 hours of the apprenticeship and CDL licensure.

If selected as an apprentice, you will be required to sign an apprenticeship agreement and commit to the full 2000 hour program.

The starting hourly rate is $21.73 per hour. First reading of applicants to take place on: Monday, 9/23/24 at 4:00 P.M. M.S.T.

This apprenticeship is a 12 month max, part year, 40 hour per week position with Medical coverage benefit option only.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Install, operate and maintain various micro-computer based traffic subsystems including: inductive loop detection systems, radar vehicle detection system, video detection and video surveillance systems, emergency vehicle pre-emption system, conflict monitors and tester, programmable audible/tactile pedestrian detection system, and the school zone flasher system.
  • Operation of fiber optics and Ethernet mesh radio communications equipment including fiber optic switches.
  • Work together with IT System Administrator to design, install, and maintain miles of fiber optics facilities plus radio communications for traffic, other city-wide uses, and the various users in and outside of Public Works.
  • Cell phone and fiber communications for transmission to CDOT’s statewide Central Traffic Monitoring Center and use by PW Street Division and other city staff.
  • Annual preventative maintenance program field work on all systems. These systems include multi million dollars of ITS assets.
  • Operation of bucket trucks, dump trucks, forklifts, underground locate equipment, and various power and hand tools.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Other duties may include, but are not limited to, work on a pavement marking crew, sign installations, and traffic counts.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in electronics, computers or a similar field preferred.

Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid commercial driver license (CDL) instruction permit.
  • Must obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months of hire.
  • Driver instruction and training is provided by the organization.

The CDL license training is subject to the condition that you must repay the City of Loveland three thousand dollars, $3,000.00 in the event you resign or you are terminated for cause within twenty-four (24) months after your starting date with the City. In such event, you irrevocably authorize repayment of the cost by set-off from any final payment of compensation or reimbursement due to you from the City. Any remaining balance shall be paid in certified funds within thirty (30) days of such resignation or termination date.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Set up and inspect safe work zones under heavy traffic conditions.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate personal computers, electronic test equipment, aerial lift trucks, hand tools, underground locating equipment, and forklift trucks for installation, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Work in the field under all types of weather conditions.
  • Operate dump trucks with snow plows for storm fighting/snow plowing operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Frequent light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.
  • Frequent exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
  • Occasional exposure to hazards that are predictable or well protected against.

Considered essential personnel required to report for duty as directed in response to community emergencies (e.g. natural disaster, fire, flood, blizzard, etc.).
