The Office of Geospatial Information (OGI) is seeking to fill a GIS Specialist position for the Department of Natural Resources. This position requires someone who can help us communicate the vision of expanding the use of geospatial technology across the department. You will be involved in developing exciting GIS applications, developing methodology for geographic analysis, and developing field mapping applications.

This position is within the Office of Administration Information Technology Services Division, Office of Geospatial Information (OGI).

  • Consult and closely work with the GIS Team Manager and other team members to evaluate and plan organizational GIS needs.
  • Plans, coordinates, facilitates, and works on specific GIS projects and activities within the assigned agency/division.
  • Serves as an expert on spatial technology matters.
  • Provides guidance on GIS data acquisition, implementation, and management of geodatabase schema, with consultation with GIS Manager.
  • Create ArcGIS Server web services and utilize REST services to develop Web applications. Create ArcGIS REST Services for near real-time data acquisition from environmental sensors for monitoring and situation awareness.
  • Plan, design, and develop ESRI ArcGIS Online Web applications including experience builder, operations dashboards, custom interactive web map applications, field maps applications, and hub site with custom initiatives.
  • Help GIS users within the department with their GIS needs. This support may include help with data creation, editing, and any technical issues related to GIS desktop software.
  • Participates in other GIS activities as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Computer Science, Geography, Environmental Science/Geology, or closely related field with strong GIS/IT emphasis.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro and extensions (such as Spatial Analyst, Arc Hydro, Network Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst etc.).
  • Working knowledge of geodatabases, database design.
  • Experiences in ESRI cloud based technology that are utilized by ArcGIS Online.
  • Skills in Python (especially ArcPy/ArcGIS API for Python), Arcade or any other scripting language such as Java Script, SQL programming.
  • Ability to learn and integrate different technology platforms in creating solutions for complex business needs.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex GIS applications.
  • Ability to convey technical information and concepts to non-technical staff and stakeholders.
  • Serves as expert on spatial technology matters.
  • Ability to define a problem, analyze relevant information, and develop solutions and plans to solve the problem.
  • Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to be self-motivated, exercise independent judgment and take action on it.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to changing GIS technologies and capabilities.
  • Successful background check results are required for employment in this position. This may include background checks involving a candidate’s name and/or fingerprints and other screenings as needed for the specific position.
