Job Description and Duties

Graduate Legal Assistants (GLAs) who are part of the Attorney General's Honors Program work in a Section within one of the California Department of Justice’s Civil, Criminal, Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse or Public Rights Divisions, as part of a dynamic legal team committed to public service. Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, Honors GLAs will have the opportunity to work on substantive legal matters of public interest and importance. They conduct legal and other research and assist in preparing a variety of legal documents, including briefs, memoranda and legislative analyses, often under tight deadlines, for client agencies or the Attorney General and other constitutional officers. Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, GLAs may have the opportunity to assist in special investigations and gain courtroom experience. They will also receive on-the-job training, career development programming, and mentorship, in addition to connecting with the 2025 Honors Program cohort and gaining exposure to the work being done across various Sections and Divisions of the California Department of Justice. Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on DOJ's current telework policy. While DOJ supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises.

  • Appointments to the Graduate Legal Assistant class will be limited term and may become permanent based upon successful passage of the California State Bar, Attorney list eligibility and successful work performance.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

A demonstrated interest in public service; a strong academic record at an accredited law school; journal, moot court and/or mock trial experience; and excellent writing skills. The Attorney General's Honors Program GLA positions are designed for applicants who are in their third year of law school and students in their final year of other graduate law programs (e.g. LL.M. programs). The program is also designed for applicants who are judicial clerks or who are participating in government, academic or public interest fellowships. Applicants must plan to take the July 2025 California Bar Exam. Failure to pass the bar exam within 12 months of employment as a GLA may result in termination from the program.
