DefinitionThe City of Milpitas Incorporated in 1954, the City of Milpitas is a bustling general-law city supervised by a council-manager form of government. The
Milpitas Police Department is a full-service department with 128 employees (94 sworn and 34 non-sworn) and provides public safety to 81,773 residents in a 13.63 square mile urban area. The Crime Analyst performs a variety of administrative and analytical assignments related to crime research for the purpose of increasing effectiveness in law enforcement operations; aids in the deployment of resources; coordinates crime analysis activities with Federal, State, and local agencies; and performs complex projects requiring independent analysis.

Crime Analyst Examples of Duties- Collect, prepare, analyze, and disseminate information relevant to actual and anticipated criminal activity.
- Conduct research and analytical studies such as suspects, incidents, and crime patterns.
- Makes recommendations related to matters of significance to the department.
- Respond to requests for crime analysis information relating to specific investigations.
- Prepare crime information in the appropriate format to individuals and groups through written reports, charts, and graphs, etc.
- Provide crime information for administrative, investigative, and patrol tactical level use.
- Maintain manual and automated systems for storage and retrieval of crime information.
- Testify in court.
- Train volunteers and interns.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Typical QualificationsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education:
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Public Administration, Statistical Analysis, or a related field is highly desirable.
Experience:
- Three years of experience performing data analysis with written evaluations and projections in criminal behavior or social science fields is highly desirable.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:- Possession of a Department of Justice Crime and Intelligence Analyst certificate is highly desirable.
Supplemental Information **Panel Interviews for this position are tentatively scheduled for the week of October 7, 2024** SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:- Receives general supervision from the Police Command Staff or Special Operations Division Captain.

RETIREMENTMembership in CalPERS (2% at 60 or 2% at 62 with three year average salary). City of Milpitas employees do not participate in Social Security,but do contribute to Medicare.
