ABOUT THE JOB:
Juvenile Community Justice Behavioral Health internship opportunities are available to students who are enrolled in a qualifying Master’s Degree program (Counseling, Social Work, Mental Health related) and are completing an internship as part of their Master’s Degree program.

Note: The responsibilities described below pertain to paid behavioral health graduate internships with Deschutes County Juvenile Community Justice.

Our paid internship program requires working between 20 to 40 hours per week for a minimum 9-month commitment to internship.

Under general administrative and clinical supervision, the Behavior Health Intern provides professional behavioral health services as a QMHP, using the Functional Family Therapy (FFT) model, designed to empower youth and families by creating strength-based behavior change that will be sustained long after treatment ends. Performs assessment, treatment protocols, case management, crisis intervention, and community outreach and in-home services to youth and their families. Provides direct clinical treatment using the FFT treatment model and principles. Some principles include leveraging strengths and focusing on the positive, interrupting blame and negativity in family meetings, and changing focus and reframing as necessary to name a few.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Applies extensive therapeutic and counseling techniques to provide excellent services to youth and their families; directs the provision and development of treatment services.
  • Provides weekly (or as needed) home-based family therapy sessions utilizing the FFT model with fidelity as an evidence based practice to referred families who have adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18.
  • Manages time and caseload work to successfully prioritize weekly case planning, data entry and evaluation of case progress, with ongoing support from supervisor and team members.

  • Effective relationship skills such as eliciting trust, warmth, being non-blaming and showing individual, familial and cultural respect, as well as cross-agency collaboration.
  • Interpersonal skills including being able to provide validation, positive interpretation and reframing as well as structuring skills and the ability to provide direction and focus during family meetings.
  • Adapting and individualizing program interventions to utilize family strengths and skills as well as cultural responsivity in working with native Spanish speaking families and communities.

Compensation

$29.2765 per hour. There are no County benefits with this position. This position is available when internship begins.

Paid internships are considered as limited-duration employment position as defined by Deschutes County HR Personnel Rules 2.010. The position may be terminated by Deschutes County based upon the availability of discrete revenue sources. If the specified discreet revenue source has yet to terminate, the position may be terminated by the County to fulfill its business needs, as determined by the sole discretion of the County. Continued employment is contingent upon continuation of specifically identified funding sources, County policies, and the business needs of the County. Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral science’s field;
  • OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled in a behavioral science’s field qualifying graduate program.


Necessary Special Requirements

Driving is a requirement. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

  • Must be in a Masters Degree program as described above.
  • Must be willing to participate in and attend three 2-day virtual FFT Trainings (paid for by the department) in the first three months of the internship. Dates of the trainings will depend on seat availability.

NOTE: Per OAR 407-007-0000 to 407-007-0100 this position requires a Criminal Background check through the State Background Check Unit/Orchards, which may also include being fingerprinted. These rules provide for the reasonable screening under ORS 181A.195, 181A.200, 409.027 AND 413.036 of the County’s employees to determine if they have a history of specific criminal behavior identified in federal or state law or rules such that they should not be allowed to work, be employed, or perform in positions covered by these rules.
