ABOUT THE POSITION

There are currently two (2) fulltime (75 bi-weekly hours) vacancies in the Building Maintenance Division. The Custodian works under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor and is responsible for custodial and light maintenance work in one or more of the County’s 16 facilities. Custodial duties include:
  • Removing trash from offices.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and replenishing paper products and soap.
  • Cleaning partitions, walls, and trash containers.
  • Sweeping and scrubbing floors, removing gum and graffiti, and dusting.
  • Conducting set up of tables and chairs, conducting furniture moves and removing old fixtures and furniture.
  • Conducting security checks of the buildings.
  • Monitoring equipment such as floor buffers, vacuums and extractors, cleaning used equipment and performing light repairs to equipment.
This position requires shift work including working on nights and weekends, wearing a County issued uniform and working in a Locked/Secured Facility. Basic computer skills are required to complete County forms and utilize County systems.

ABOUT YOU

Our Highly Qualified Candidate is proficient in all aspects of custodial services, and experienced in the practices, procedures, and tools associated with custodial maintenance tasks. Experience with high and low speed floor buffers, extractors and vacuums is highly desirable. They are able to exercise sound, independent judgment, are detail oriented, and flexible with scheduled routes. The ideal candidate is able to work independently with little supervision, has personal and professional integrity and possesses initiative. They also have have excellent oral communication and organizational skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials, chemicals, disinfectants, and equipment used in cleaning and caring for floors, walls, fixtures and furniture.
  • Equipment, materials and supplies used in building maintenance.
  • Equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.
  • First aid and applicable safety precautions.
Ability to:
  • Read and understand signs, labels, work schedules and written instructions.
  • Write and enter information on time cards and security records.
  • Operate floor care machines and other custodial equipment properly and efficiently such as floor buffers, steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuum, mops, broom, dusting equipment.
  • Work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Communicate effectively with the public, co-workers and supervisors both orally and in writing.
  • Use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions with persons contacted during the performance of duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed. Typically, equivalent to one (1) year of recent full-time custodial experience in commercial buildings and/or facilities that demonstrates possession of the following knowledge and ability requirements

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates will need to successfully pass a background investigation conducted by the Marin County Sheriff's Department, to include fingerprint and criminal history evaluation.

Driver's License:
This job class requires travel between various County and business-related locations. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver’s license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County, including review of a recent DMV history. Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license is required and a satisfactory driving history record as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles is required at the time of selection interview.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
