Position Summary:

This position oversees all aspects of the trail and open space management and our public conservation efforts. Includes managing city owned property and park lands that lay within and outside of city limits. May coordinate with non-profits and local organizations to maintain and create new options for our diverse and growing mountain community in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees the Trails and Open Space Area including all inspections, maintenance, repairs, conservation, planning, and improvements.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships and communication channels with other City of Glenwood Springs Departments, Garfield County, and NGOs for projects and partnerships.
  • Actively leads and assigns appropriate duties including, but not limited to, trail repair work, herbicide application, restroom servicing, routine maintenance, and general landscaping.
  • Collaborates with outside groups in the Roaring Fork Valley to fund, maintain, and plan future recreational spaces through grants, partnerships, and volunteer coordination.
  • Uses the Parks asset inventory of the Asset Management System (VUEWorks), and mapping system (GIS) to track work orders and create individual work assignments.
  • Performs annual park land evaluations, trail inspections, archery range improvements, and actively participates in development planning processes.
  • Monitors and maintains the Trails and Open Space budget, making informed recommendations for expenditures where it is deemed necessary. Oversees and approves expenditures. Oversees capital management for special in-house projects.
  • Coordinates closely with Division Supervisors to give and request assistance on special projects and assist with park maintenance as needed.
  • Always represents the City of Glenwood Springs with courteous conduct, excellent work quality and production, and professional appearance.
  • Administers noxious weed mitigation, mosquito control, and snow removal in designated areas, following all proper safety precautions and procedures.

Education, Training & Certifications:

Necessary:

  • Associate degree in Parks Maintenance, or a related field and four years of grounds maintenance experience, with at least one year being at a supervisory level; or a bachelor’s degree with two years of grounds maintenance experience, with at least one year being at a supervisory level; or any similar combination of education, skills, and experience.
  • Ability to hike and/or ride mountain bike trails and recreation systems on an ongoing basis.


  • Possess or ability to obtain the following within 6-12 months of hire. (Provided by City of Glenwood Springs)
  • Commercial Herbicide Applicators Supervisors Certificate.
  • Must possess computer skills and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel as well as becoming proficient in the organizations financial and asset management programs.
  • Ability to obtain certificates in areas such as park safety, irrigation maintenance, and other areas outside typical responsibilities.


Desired:

  • Bilingual - (fluent or semi-fluent) in Spanish.
  • GIS - proficiency or demonstrated ability to work with geographic systems.
