The Department:

The Santa Clara City Library is a department of the City of Santa Clara. The Santa Clara City Library operates three facilities, a virtual branch through a website, and a bookmobile. The Library provides a collection of virtual and physical books and resources, services and programs, public internet access, adult literacy and English as Second Language classes for the Santa Clara community. Services and programs are free and open to all.

The Position:

The Library Technology Consultant provides assistance with and instruction to the public on the use of library computers, electronic resources, printing, and audio-visual equipment. The Library Technology Consultant performs complicated tasks involving computer and audio-visual equipment, sensitive patron information, and handling money.

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Typical Duties

Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed.

Under general supervision:
  • Monitors the public’s use of computer equipment in the Technology Center, meeting rooms and throughout the library.
  • Provides individual and group technology instruction, including preparing and running technology classes at various City locations.
  • Assists the public with the use of library computers, software and electronic resources; resolves problems and answers basic questions regarding computer, laptop & mobile device usage.
  • Performs basic troubleshooting on Library self-checkout machines, scanners, and genealogy equipment.
  • Monitors the use of technology equipment to deter theft and/or vandalism.
  • Cleans and inspects computer equipment, replaces printer cartridges and printer paper.
  • Maintains an inventory of computer supplies and peripheral devices; checks out peripheral devices to patrons; submits requests for replacements when needed.
  • Oversees the Internet queuing system and monitors patrons’ time usage.
  • Troubleshoots printer problems and Internet access problems involving patron cards.
  • Assists patrons with payment for print jobs, photocopies & faxes, handles cash and credit cards.
  • Accesses patron library accounts on library software.
  • Configures and operates audio-visual equipment in conference rooms for meetings and/or public functions.?
  • Configures and operates basic types of computer hardware and peripherals.
  • Assists library users in connecting to the internet with mobile devices, WiFi hotspots, and laptop/Chromebook computers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements:

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED

Minimum Experience Requirements:

One (1) year experience with computer and audio-visual equipment.

License/Certifications:

None.

Other Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application.
  • This position will be required to work on Sundays. Sunday hours will start January 2025, with 40 hours of training in November/December required for working on Sundays.
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 12 hours each week, including some evenings and weekend rotations.
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks, such as lifting, bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and walking up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Windows- and Chrome-based operating systems and standard office software.
  • iPhone and Android mobile operating systems, including common cloud computing services such as Google Drive or iCloud.
  • Computer peripheral devices and audio-visual equipment (microphones, speakers, projectors).

Ability to:
  • Learn library policies and procedures.
  • Work independently and prioritize work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Troubleshoot routine technology problems, and recognize and report complex problems to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Establish and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with others contacted in the course of work, including under stressful situations.
  • Work effectively in groups in a team based environment and achieve common goals.
  • Perform physical tasks, such as lifting and carrying library materials weighing up to 40 lbs., bending, stooping, reaching, and walking up and down stairs.
