    $7,083.00 - $7,500.00 Per Month ($85.000 - $90,000.00 Annually)

    Salary is commensurate with experience.

    Position Summary

    Reporting to the Director of Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), the Clinical Counselor provides a full-range of individual and group psychological services to students, as well as consultation to faculty and staff who represent a wide range of multicultural backgrounds, presenting complex psychosocial, personal, and family issues. The Clinical Counselor effectively represents CAPS as a member of the University faculty, and performs additional professional services as individual skills, interests, and agency needs indicate.

    Position Information

    This position is a full-time, 10-month, position paid over twelve months, with 2 months off as determined by the needs of the center. While the position is classified as “temporary,” the expectation is that it will be renewed annually contingent on performance, departmental needs, and budgetary constraints. At this time, CAPS is providing both in-person and remote (via Zoom) services to students. This position offers flexibility with in-person and remote work contingent on department coverage and needs. Some in-person work is required; there is no option for full remote work.

    The successful candidate will maintain a clinical caseload of students representing the diversity of SF State students. Clinical counselors shall spend at least 60-65% of their time base providing direct services. The duties of this position are focused on: providing intake and assessment/triage, provision of brief individual, group, marital, and couples counseling (using time-limited treatment models), outreach, referrals, crisis intervention, and consultation.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    Applicants for Student Services Professional, Academic-Related I should have a combination of education and experience comparable to the minimum qualifications typically required of individuals eligible for holding the rank of Assistant Professor.

    A primary consideration in evaluating the education and experience of candidates for an SSP AR I position is the degree in which such experience and education provide evidence of the specialized skill and knowledge requirements and the potential ability essential to successful performance of the assigned functions of the position to be filled.

    Minimum qualifications typically required include possession of an appropriate terminal degree, e.g., either a Doctorate in behavioral sciences, counseling, psychology or a specific related academic field or a California license as a Psychologist, Marriage, Family and Child Counselor or as a Clinical Social Worker which requires a Master’s Degree in social work with appropriate internship.

    Knowledge and Abilities:

    Dependent upon the specific position and classification under consideration, candidates should possess most or all of the following:

    Knowledge of organizational development, planning and structure; principles of administrative, personnel and fiscal management; professional counseling techniques and strategies; statistics and research methodologies; specific academic discipline. Knowledge of or ability to understand the role and functioning of Student Services and Academic Affairs programs in a higher education setting and work with students from multicultural backgrounds presenting various attitudes and value systems.

    Ability to counsel students utilizing professional counseling techniques and strategies and meet the needs of a multicultural, diverse and multi-aged student body group; plan and conduct workshops and groups utilizing innovative facilitation techniques; visualize needed changes and improvements in counseling or related programs; originate new, different or creative solutions to student problems; gain acceptance of program operations based on positive working relationships and recognition and understanding of the need for compromise; understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organizations served; collect and analyze data or information; solve problems and to draw conclusions from an analysis of the data collected; apply and utilize various statistical and research methods; organize and present data and information in a concise and logical manner; interview skillfully; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; prepare and present oral and written reports which are clear, concise and comprehensive; and ability to continually increase the range of comprehension and knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of the research performed in the Student Services area.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience working in a multicultural urban setting;
    • Experience in the provision of clinical services to students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or PoC;
    • Experience in the provision of outreach and consultation services to the university community, particularly for students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or PoC;
    • Experience and clinical effectiveness in multicultural counseling approaches with ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities;
    • Knowledge and experience working with clinical issues common in a university setting (e.g. substance abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, conflict resolution, individual/group conflict resolution, trauma debriefing, etc.);
    • Clinical skills and experience in time-limited, short-term approaches, with a broad range of complex personal and interpersonal issues;
    • Ability to establish effective working collaborations between individuals and groups representing different cultures, interest groups, and/or departments;
    • Ability to provide effective consultation regarding a variety of psychological incident debriefing capabilities;
    • Extensive experience making discerning judgments regarding complex legal and ethical issues;
    • Experience in working with immigrant and international student populations;
    • Proficiency in a second language.

    Environmental/Physical/Special

    Incumbent has their own work area and must be able to work effectively with a variety of individuals and function in a high visibility area, occasionally under pressure. Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. Occasional evening, after-hours, and weekend coverage for university events and/or emergency/crisis situations are required. Incumbent must be able to work remotely as needed.

    Pre-Employment Requirements

    Incumbent must possess and maintain a current, valid, and unrestricted license (MFT, LCSW, or Psychologist) to practice as a therapist in California from the California Board of Behavioral Sciences or Board of Psychology, or be eligible to sit for licensure by the anticipated start date. If the licensure is out of state, it must comply with the Board of Psychology regulations for obtaining licensure in order to practice in California.
