GENERAL DESCRIPTION PLEASE NOTE: The salary listed on this posting will receive a 5% legislative appropriated increase effective 9/1/2024. Fort Leaton State Historic Site lies deep in the Chihuahua Desert of the Big Bend region in west Texas. This is a truly beautiful but harsh area. Summer days often well exceed 100 degrees and the park is located far from many amenities. The closest airport is about 4 hours away. Please carefully consider these factors when applying.
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs entry-level building maintenance and construction work and is responsible for the overall renovation, and restoration of Fort Leaton State Historic Site. Performs daily maintenance of facilities, exhibits, grounds, picnic areas, and campgrounds to include preventative cleaning and inspecting of restrooms, exhibit rooms, and office spaces. Maintains and operates all types of equipment including hand and power tools, mowers, tractors, and other equipment. Participates in safety program, special events, interpretative and visitor services. Responsible for effective coordination with Big Bend Ranch State Park and other staff on all matters affecting programs within the park. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Completion of 8th grade.
Experience: Experience in facilities, grounds, or equipment maintenance.
Licensure: Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Graduation from High School or GED.
Experience: Experience working with the public;
Experience with mud or adobe plastering techniques.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of adobe mud plastering maintenance techniques;
Knowledge of general maintenance techniques and minor repairs of facilities and equipment;
Knowledge of general custodial work and housekeeping;
Knowledge of basic safety procedures;
Knowledge of preventive maintenance program to historic sites;
Knowledge of basic mathematics;
Knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance techniques;
Knowledge in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, tractors, vehicles and other mechanized equipment;
Knowledge of general custodial duties;
Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

Skill in using standard office equipment;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;
May be required to operate a State vehicle;
Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays;
Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;
Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
