Job Description

Job Summary

Under minimal or no supervision of the Manager of Construction Services (MCS), or Construction Manager (CM), the Assistant Construction Manager (ACM) works independently or in conjunction with the MCS/CM to simultaneously manage the construction of numerous, public works governed construction projects utilizing outside contractors and our Facilities Management construction staff. These projects include, major capital, minor capital, deferred maintenance, capital renewal, department, and other improvement projects, and will utilize various funding sources including state, enterprise funds, auxiliaries, grants, department funds, and donations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently, or under the supervision of the MCS/CM, oversees all project related documents. Oversees or otherwise ensues that the appropriate project logs are updated to reflect any changes in the status of the processing of document for the project.
  • Independently, or under the supervision of the MCS/CM, is responsible for the day-to-day construction management and administration of various construction projects, regardless of size, contracting method, or funding source.
  • Determines, consults, and coordinates with the Inspectors, for all required inspections and testing required for the project.
  • Reviews change order requests, submittals, RFI’s, etc., and works with the Project Engineer, when applicable, to determine the validity, ensure that the cost is fair, and looks at all the impacts that the proposed change order request might have.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of construction practices, procedures, and engineering methods. This encompasses scheduling, field instructions, change orders, and cost-loaded schedules. The candidate must be well-versed in building, plumbing, mechanical, fire, electrical, ADA, and various safety codes, including state, federal, and local ordinances.

The role requires the ability to work independently to identify and resolve complex construction issues, develop strategies, and negotiate solutions that minimize risk to the University. The candidate should be capable of handling multiple complex projects simultaneously with excellent follow-through.

Proficiency in personal productivity tools (e.g., Word, Excel) and specialized construction management software (e.g., Prolog) is essential. The ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, along with strong administrative and organizational skills, is crucial. The candidate must represent the University professionally, work effectively with diverse groups, contractors, and individuals, and bring consensus to problem-solving. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also required.

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Construction Management or related field, and three (3) years project management, engineering or inspection experience required.

• At least three (3) years of progressively responsible construction contract management experience, in the role of project manager, construction manager, or inspector. Prefer experience working in a university or large institutional setting or public works environment, with public sector, low bid and job order contracting experience.

• CASp certification preferred.

• LEED AP BD+C preferred.

Physical Summary

  • Light work - Job involves some lifting of medium weight objects (10-20 pounds) and/or 10% - 20% of the job involves standing or walking.


Licenses / Certificates

Valid California driver’s license.

• Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

CSU MPP Compensation Summary Range: The MPP Comp Summary Range for this position is $7,240 - $10,860 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
