General Description and Classification Standards

Oversee the job functions responsible for golf course and landscaped area maintenance. May assist in training and supervising staff; resolving human resource issues, implementing agronomic maintenance, and development programs. Organizes, monitors, and supervises facility maintenance operations at a high experience level; performs a variety of technical skilled and unskilled tasks relative to golf course and facility maintenance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive; may perform other duties as assigned.
  • Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, reviews, and participates in the work of staff responsible for facility maintenance.
  • Maintains the appearance and safety of the course by diagnosing and reporting agronomic issues; managing irrigation system adjustments and scheduling; maintaining a wide variety of turf grasses in extreme climatic conditions; managing course preparations for tournament and daily play; operating various hand and power tools as needed to accomplish mowing, edging or cultivation as needed; integrating environmental programs specializing in IPM (Integrated Pest Management); overseeing maintenance of the golf cart fleet; assisting in the coordination, scheduling and supervising capital improvement projects.
  • Manages maintenance operations (employees involved in maintaining greens, fairways, tees, sand traps, bodies of water, roughs, maintenance shop, golf carts and clubhouse) by providing assistance in recruiting, selecting, training, scheduling, evaluating, supervising and correcting when necessary; and assists the Operations Manager in executing safety meetings.
  • Assists with administrative functions, such as the preparation and administration of the facility maintenance budget, by maintaining maintenance records and developing required maintenance reports; tracking maintenance expenses including payroll, supplies, fertilizer, chemicals, etc... etc...; and informing the Operations Manager of parts, supplies or equipment needed.
  • Participates in the development of goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures; makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies, and procedures; participates in the implementation of approved policies and procedures; monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.


Additional Responsibilities:
  • Ensures a clean and orderly maintenance compound at all times.
  • Implements and support all initiatives and programs as requested by management.
  • Develops and organizes preventative maintenance and safety inspection programs for the course, facility and equipment.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the field of golf course and facility maintenance.
  • Other duties may be assigned by management.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list.

Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a building maintenance, repair, and construction program; knowledge of materials, methods, terminology, equipment and tools used in the maintenance, repair, and construction of building structures and systems including those used in performing rough and finished carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, mechanical, and painting work; knowledge of principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation; knowledge of construction and project management principles; knowledge of principles and practices of safety management.

Skilled in planning, scheduling, supervising, reviewing and evaluating the work of others; skilled in training others in work procedures; skilled in preparing and maintaining a variety of accurate written and computerized records and reports pertaining to the work; skilled in reading and interpreting plans, maps and specifications and manuals; skilled in operating and maintaining equipment and tools used in facilitating maintenance and custodial work; skilled in identifying and implementing effective courses of action to complete assigned work; skilled in estimating labor, material and equipment needs.

Ability to read and understand construction drawings, plans and specifications; ability to organize, implement and direct facility maintenance operations and activities; ability to interpret and explain pertinent department policies and procedures; ability to perform the most complex maintenance duties and operate related equipment; ability to perform heavy manual labor, including moving furniture, and lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, regular bending, climbing, crouching, and stooping; ability to develop and recommend systems and procedures related to assigned operations; ability to operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience:

At least five (5) years of experience as Superintendent (or related maintenance supervisory role) in public or private golf course maintenance; required.

Pesticide Application license is required.

Completion of appropriate technical course or Associates degree. (Equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis).

Preferred Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy, or a related field and five (5) years of experience as Superintendent (or related maintenance supervisory role) in public or private golf course maintenance.

Licensures and Certifications:

Valid state driver’s license required.
