What You'll Be Doing

Emergency Communication Center (ECC) Supervisors are responsible for the efficient operation of the ECC, overseeing operations and the actions of personnel. Supervisory responsibility shall be carried out in accordance with ECC policies and procedures, Wake County Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, and all applicable laws.

ECC Shift Supervisor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Schedule personnel in accordance with the ECC Personnel Scheduling policy including maintenance of on-call schedules, and appropriate accounting of any overtime, leave requests and leave balances for assigned subordinates
  • Have a thorough knowledge of all ECC procedures, all applicable WCSO policies and procedures, and their applicability to diverse situations
  • Ensure personnel are aware of and understand all ECC procedures, directives, and memorandums
  • Enforce all policies and procedures and report any significant violation of policy or procedure to the subordinate’s immediate supervisor without delay
  • Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch requests for service as well as ensure that all calls are dispatched in a timely manner ensuring information and addresses are correct
  • Maintain a business-like environment conducive to a professional organization
  • Hold employees accountable for performance as supervisors are accountable for the accomplishment of tasks performed by subordinates
  • Ensure that all personnel have adequate tools, supplies and materials for optimal performance and staff development
  • Maintain records of all assigned personnel including commendations, disciplinary actions and other related information for evaluation purposes including rewarding and disciplining employees as appropriate
  • Receive and investigate complaints involving ECC personnel, if permitted by existing staffing levels and/or workload
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by the ECC Director, ECC Deputy Directors, or Division Leadership

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Citizen of the United States
  • Three years of experience as a telecommunicator at a 911 or emergency communications center
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted
  • No felony charges or convictions
  • Candidates must undergo an extensive background investigation including, but not limited to, physical fitness assessment, reading test, medical exam, drug screen and psychological exam
  • Must meet all the applicable standards with the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission as well as the policies of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Experience as a supervisor in an emergency communications center
  • Three plus years of experience working in a Public Safety Answering Point (9-1-1) or Emergency Communications Center for a government public safety agency
  • Current certification from the NC Sheriff’s Education & Training Standards Commission Basic Telecommunicator Certification Course (TCC) or an industry equivalent that meets or exceeds this standard (e.g., IAED Emergency Telecommunicator Certification (ETC), NENA

Emergency Service Worker Statement
