This person will perform professional level reviews of a wide variety of construction plans to ensure compliance with city codes, legal requirements and national standards. This person will work alongside other plans examiners, fire inspectors, and multiple other city departments.

About the Position:
Performs professional level review of construction plans to ensure compliance with city codes, legal requirements and national standards. May serve as a team leader in coordinating multidisciplinary plan review activities.

Anticipated starting salary may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited educational institution in Architecture, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering or closely related field.
  • Three years of experience with construction plan review specific to the job assignment or discipline.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or job-related experience that meets the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
  • Current International Code Council (ICC) certification in Building Plans Examiner or Fire Plans Examiner OR a minimum level III NICET (National Institute for the Certification of Engineering Technologies).
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work


Essential Functions

Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:

  • Performs technical reviews and approval of construction, fire and life-safety protection plans, ensuring compliance of city codes, requirements and national standards.
  • Performs plan review and approval of fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and other fire protection systems for commercial and residential properties, providing a high level of customer service.
  • Problem solves with contractors, developers and citizens to ensure customer's needs are met within City codes and standards.
  • Interfaces with planning, zoning, building, water and civil engineering staff members on development and design issues.
  • Responds to questions submitted by the public, which are related to life safety features, systems, codes and regulations.
  • Assists Fire Inspectors for existing and new construction occupancies as needed by the Prevention Services Division.


Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Most work is performed in a City office environment, with occasional work performed outdoors on site moving over rough terrain.
  • Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to dust, grease, noise, inclement weather, temperature extremes and unpleasant but not hazardous odors.
  • Travel to/from meetings and various locations.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer, telephone, calculator, copy and fax machines requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movement.
