Ideal Candidate

The City of Burlingame is looking for applicants who possess excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills to apply for this exciting opportunity in the Public Works Department/Engineering Division as a part-time, temporary Engineering Technician II. Under the general supervision of a Senior Engineer, the Engineering Technician II performs paraprofessional engineering office and field related work. Duties include performing surveying, drafting, minor inspections, issuing encroachment permits, and providing assistance with traffic, sidewalk, and other engineering programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Interacts with the public.
  • Prepares plans for construction drawings in computer-aided drafting program (CAD).
  • Assists the Project Engineer in preparing project and contract documents.
  • Processes and issues permits.
  • Performs public right-of-way inspections.
  • Investigates and handles complaints related to encroachment permits.
  • Prepares maps and plots plans.
  • Processes construction progress payments, invoices, and submittals.
  • Prepares computer drawings, engineering computation, and spreadsheets for engineering and construction projects.
  • Assists with traffic studies, surveys, data analysis, and prepare reports on findings.
  • Researches property and easement information.
  • Maintains traffic calming devices, and creates work orders.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS

Knowledge of: Principles of algebra, geometry and trigonometry and their nomenclature; symbols, methods, practices, techniques and instruments used in drafting and survey work; geography of the city; Microsoft Bluebeam, ArcGIS, and CAD.

Ability to: Collect and analyze data; communicate effectively with the public and internal departments.

Skills: Ability to operate survey and drafting instruments and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: College level graduate in the engineering field and/or sufficient experience to perform the above duties doing similar work.

License and Certification: Certification as an Engineering-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Ability to sit for long periods of time at desk or drafting table; to stand for long periods of time at counter and in field; to walk several blocks at a time in field; to be able to read/follow instructions and carry on detailed, technical conversations on the phone and at the counter; to crouch, kneel, stoop, squat to perform a variety of tasks; to climb hills; to lift manhole covers; to work outdoors in occasional adverse weather; to have sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above functions; to work effectively and cooperatively with staff and the public; to deal with wide variety of people with tact and diplomacy; to keep accurate records.

Benefits

Sick Leave - Effective January 1, 2024, an employee who works 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment may accrue paid sick leave at a rate of one (1) hour for every thirty (30) hours worked. The sick leave bank will roll over from year to year but cannot exceed the maximum accrual cap of 80 hours.

Vacation Pay - Effective January 1, 2016, Unrepresented Part-time employees who work 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment with the City of Burlingame accrue vacation pay at the rate of one (1) hour for every 52 hours worked. The maximum annual vacation accrual is 16 hours per year. No employee shall be allowed to have an accumulation of more 6 than two (2) years’ worth of vacation accrual to their credit at any one time

No other benefits are offered. This position is at will and is not part of the City's Civil Service System. There is no guarantee of hours and employment may end at any time.

Special Instructions

SALARY & HOURS

Engineering Technician II: $37.47 - $45.55 per hour, depending on experience. Approximately 25-30 hours per week with availability during weekdays.
