Job Description

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Under direction, plans, coordinates, oversees and participates in leading the work of helpers and contractors in general carpentry work.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Graduation from High School or possession of a GED; and
  • Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in carpentry; and
  • Two years of experience as a journeyman carpenter; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the required duties.

Required Special Qualifications

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • As required, coordinates the work of assigned helpers and contractors in performing skilled carpentry work such as building frames, stairways, shelves, cabinets, grading work, constructing form work, mixing and pouring concrete while keeping quality and standard high;
  • Erects, repairs and maintains frame buildings and structures; erects walls and roofing; installs, repairs and maintains window frames, sashes, door frames, doors, screens and roofing systems;
  • Builds, repairs and maintains furniture and cabinets;
  • Installs partitions and applies floor coverings, wall coverings and wood paneling;
  • Installs ceramic tile and window glass;
  • Replaces caulking and sealants inside and outside of buildings and structures;
  • Prepares sketches of carpentry work to be done;
  • Reviews plans and specifications of work to be done;
  • Operates power saws, jointers, shapers, planers and other power and hand tools;
  • Estimates costs;
  • Enforces safety regulations;
  • Keeps records and creates reports;
  • Orders supplies, procures parts, materials and equipment;
  • Performs window washing as needed;
  • Makes minor repairs and maintains facilities fencing, i.e. chain link security fencing systems;
  • Performs related work as required.
