    CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Athletic Trainer I

    UNION CODE: R02

    FT/PT: Full-time

    PAY PLAN: 12-month

    WORKPLACE TYPE: On-site (work in-person at business location)

    ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $4,300 - $4,800
    • However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate’s experience, education, skills, and training.

    CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $4,012 - $7,743

    PAY BASIS: Monthly

    SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANT:

    POSITION PURPOSE: Under general supervision of the Associate Athletics Director for Compliance, and under the daily lead direction of the Head Athletic Trainer, the Athletic Trainer I follows well established guidelines and procedures in providing the full range of clinical athletic training functions for student-athletes during training and competition, in accordance with the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) guidelines. The Athletic Trainer I also provides injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation for athletic injuries.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Injury Treatment/Rehabilitation
    Prevent, recognize, and assess athletic injuries. Use a variety of therapeutic modalities in accordance with physician orders including but not limited to heat, cold, light, sound, electricity, and rehabilitation and exercise equipment. Apply bandages, tapes, and braces to prevent and treat injuries. Inform coaching staff and other health professionals on the status of injuries and treatment plans. Implement rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries using appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments. Monitor rehabilitation plans and progress. Assist with and assign student-athletes for therapy as needed. Assist with coordinating student-athlete doctor’s appointments as needed. Consult with more senior Athletic Trainers, physicians, and other health care staff on injuries and treatment plans and coordinate with coaching staff. May provide access to over-the-counter medication for student athletes in accordance with physician directions, applicable university police, and legal guidelines, ensuring required documentation. Maintain equipment and cleanliness of the athletic training and rehabilitation facilities.
    Evaluation/Prevention/Conditioning of Injuries
    Regularly evaluate the physical condition of student athletes. Advise students on how to prevent injuries and maintain their physical condition. Counsel athletes and staff regarding conditioning, athletic training, and rehabilitation. Assist in designing conditioning programs to prevent injuries.
    Home & Away Game & Practice Health Care
    Attend practices and athletic events to provide medical emergency coverage to student athletes. Travel with sports teams to away games as needed.
    Record Keeping & Insurance Claim Reporting
    Maintain appropriate medical records of injuries, treatment plans, and progress.
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

    LICENSES - Possess and maintain National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) certification for Athletic Trainer. Possession of a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain by date of hire. CPR/AED certified.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) -
    • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
    • Ability to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries.
    • Ability to use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries.
    • Ability to determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals.
    • Ability to recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid.
    • Ability to use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions and work in an environment with competing priorities.
    • Must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians, and other health professionals.
    • General knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation.
    • Knowledge of the full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis and other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage.
    • Ability to effectively use rehabilitation and exercise equipment.
    • Ability to follow rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses’ governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety.
    • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.
    • Ability to comply with HIPAA to effectively communicate high level and sensitive medical information.
    • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
    • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner.
    • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
    • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
    • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
    • Required to travel with teams to competitions.
    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master’s degree in Athletic Training.
    • Previous experience with collegiate and/or professional athletes.
    • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: MEDIUM WORK - up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits. Required to perform work of an active nature, requiring sufficient physical stamina to carry out duties. Requires use of well-developed hand eye coordination for precise motions and use of small instruments. Requires ambulatory ability to lift medium-to-heavy weight materials, balance, and walk and stand for extended periods of time. Requires hand and arm strength to perform massage and kneading movements. Requires visual acuity to observe moving objects and recognize physical injuries.

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
    • Is exposed to excessive noise.
    • Is exposed to marked changes in temperature and/or humidity.
    • Is exposed to dust, fumes, gases, or radiation, microwave.
    • Drives motorized equipment.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
