Job Description

Type of Appointment: Part Time (20 hours per week), Temporary (10 month appointment)

Job Classification: Student Services Professional II

Anticipated Hiring Range: Up to $2,451 per month based on part-time hours

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8am - 12pm, unless otherwise notified. This position may work occasional evening and weekends in support of evening class needs.

THE DEPARTMENT:

As part of the Division of Student Affairs, the Care Center is the first-stop location for students seeking assistance with basic needs and well-being services. Our goal is to normalize resource-seeking and create a culture of care where all students have the tools and resources to achieve their personal academic and career goals. Our services are available to all enrolled students and include the following: Housing Resources - Emergency Housing, Rapid Rehousing, Bridge Housing, and Prevention Services; Food Resources - CalFresh application assistance and meal assistance; Financial Assistance - Basic Needs Grants, Financial Aid assistance; Clothing Assistance - Clothes Closet Services; Advocacy & Support - navigating campus resources; Case Management - referrals to on and off campus resources such as mental health, housing, and food county services; Wellbeing Support - workshops, groups and community events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Care Services & Student Support
  • Assist with day-to-day operations, checking in students for Clothes Closet, CalFresh Outreach or Case Management scheduled or walk-in appointments, and answering office phones.
  • Participate in Care Center walk-in hours structure.
  • Provide case management services for student seeking low-level services through the Care Center such as meal assistance, the Basic Needs Grant and academic support. This may include providing co-located services for programs and departments across campus such as TREE, MSI, SSEP, and academic colleges.
  • Provide staff coverage to the Clothes Closet or CalFresh Outreach.
  • Provide support for outreach and connection of various social service programs such as Medi-Cal, CalFresh, and CalWORKs which includes responding to student referrals from administrators, faculty, staff and other members of the campus community and provides feedback/follow up to referring parties where appropriate and on a need-to-know basis.
  • Implement selected recommendations for improvement and expansion of current Care Center and basic needs services, particularly new initiatives.
  • Provide support for new Care Center Initiatives as needed (i.e. cap & gown program, technology lending program)
  • Utilize Maxient (institutional care coordination information system) to schedule meetings and provide support and resources related to student’s wellbeing; Maintain confidential student records and tracks student progress in electronic database.
  • Refer students to off campus resources as appropriate.

Outreach and Awareness
  • Assist in the planning and execution of large-scale outreach and promotion events for the Care Center and Care Services including but not limited to wellness events, mental health resource fairs, and participation in campus-wide tabling and outreach events.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate programs and interventions for increasing awareness of the Care Center and its services.
  • Promote a community of care by assisting campus-wide trainings on Care Center services, basic needs, and other care related topics.
  • Develop and deliver specialized training programs as requested by campus departments based on their needs, departmental trends, and experiences with students.
  • Plan and implement publicity/marketing to promote the Care Center and its services.
  • Coordinate programs to support at risk students, including exploring new and innovative ways to engage students, faculty, and staff.

Assessment & Evaluation
  • Assist in the collection of assessment data for the Clothes Closet and outreach events.
  • Assist in assessing outcomes and developing strategies for improved services, programs, and communications.

Other Duties as Assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned incidental to the nature of the position or appropriate to the missions of the Care Center, the Division of Student Affairs, and the university.
  • Support the Care Center on collaborative initiatives related to supporting and advocating for students.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, social work, or related field.
  • Previous experience working with Care Teams or Basic Needs related programs.
  • Proven ability to identify problems/challenges, use sound judgment and reasoning to make crucial decision autonomously.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute intentional and impactful large-scale events.
  • Demonstrated ability in managing difficult and complex situations involving students.
  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques within educational settings.
  • Experience developing and maintaining case management files.
  • Broad knowledge of resources for physical/mental health care and services, crisis prevention, education outreach to faculty, staff, students and parents.
  • Acute attention to detail; excellent oral and written communication to assess services and learning outcomes.
  • Understanding of the application of FERPA, medical privacy guidelines and other applicable laws and policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently.
  • High degree of personal and professional integrity, a strong sense of ethnics and respect for privacy and confidentiality.
  • Well-developed skills for conferring with students, faculty and staff about an emergency.
  • Experience speaking in a variety of public settings such as classrooms and large group assemblies.
  • General knowledge of statistics and research methodologies to prepare reports and presentations.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable university structures, policies, and procedures.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the Academic Professionals of California (APC) bargaining unit 4. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $4,841 and maximum $6,884 per month.
