Job Description

Job Summary

The City of Greenville is looking for a Crime Analyst II in our Police Department! Under general supervision of the Assistant Chief of Police, this position is responsible for research and analysis of complex law enforcement data; identification and interpretation of criminal activity, patterns, and trends; and forecasting trends to aid in staffing and deployment of police personnel.

Examples of Duties

  • Conduct research and strategic crime analysis to identify crime patterns and trends; analyzes long term crime patterns and trends using probability studies and complex statistical analyses such as random samplings, correlation, and regression analysis; develops and tests hypotheses; develops victim and suspect profiles (e.g. physical or vehicle description profiles); forecasts future criminal activity;
  • Prepare strategic action plans; assists operations and management personnel in planning the deployment of resources for the prevention and suppression of criminal activity;
  • Create written and oral presentations, using charts and graphs, to inform police officers, detectives, investigators, and commanders of emerging or existing crime series, patterns, and trends, as well as suspect and victim profiles;
  • Conduct tactical crime analyses, identifying current crime series and hot spots; prepares tactical action plans;
  • Collect and organize criminal information from all available resources, including the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) system, field interviews, intelligence information, other agencies, media, review of crime reports and supplements, informational surveys, and retrieval of crime information stored in case and assigned data files in order to study and analyze past and existing crime series, patterns, and trends;
  • Attend regional meetings of crime analysis professionals in order to share information on crime patterns, new methodologies, and developing tools;
  • Monitor local, regional, and national crime trends;
  • Process routine and special requests of departmental and City personnel, other agencies, the media, and citizens, from written correspondence and statistical summaries and reports relating to crime analysis;
  • Ensure policies and procedures pertaining to crime analysis comply with Federal and State legal and judicial requirements and with standards of accreditation;
  • Monitor and determine effectiveness of crime analysis information and services provided; provides feedback analysis and program evaluation using available crime data;
  • Draft and prepare reports, memoranda, general orders, standard operating procedures, and similar materials pertaining to crime analysis;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, mathematics/statistics, criminal justice, computer science, sociology, police science, or related field. Master's degree preferred; and
  • At least two (2) of directly related work experience in crime analysis, GIS systems analysis or general data analysis, design, development, and integration (preferably in a city government setting); experience in a variety of GIS and client/server computing environments.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
  • GIS applications, including ESRI's suite of software for GIS.
  • SQL databases, Visual Basic and ArcGIS is a plus. Ability to create/update databases essential.
  • quantitative methods and research techniques to include knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of statistical analysis including multivariate, frequency, functional, cluster, correlation, and regression analysis
  • crime analysis methodologies including cartographic analysis, crime mapping, operations analysis, linking, profiling, law enforcement operations, procedures, and regulations.
  • techniques and principles of report writing and presentations;
  • standard English grammar and usage; GIS and RMS systems.

  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
  • Must currently possess a valid driver's license. (Note: A valid driver's license is a current driver's license that is not revoked, suspended, or subject to limited restoration or conditional operation privileges).
