Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs, the First-Year Experience Coordinator manages academic orientation, supporting, and advising activities for freshmen and first-year transfer students. These activities are designed to ensure ongoing, individual, and holistic support that enables all first-year students to develop a strong foundation for retention and academic success through graduation. The coordinator also oversees the College of Engineering (COE) Veterans and Active Military community. Finally, the incumbent provides academic advising to pre-majors and participates in SOAR advising activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Student Program Development and Oversight - Develop long term strategic objectives and goals for the First Year Experience. Analyze, review, monitor, and collect data on the effectiveness of First Year Experience workshops and events.
  • Oversight of Veterans and Active Military Activities and Programs - Oversee budget and daily operations, including working with Dean, Associate Dean, and Director of Development on industry impact reports for funding purposes. Hire, train, and oversee COE Veteran Student Ambassadors each semester.
  • Pre-major Advising - Provide and conduct comprehensive academic advising to pre-major students regarding curriculum, major and General Education course requirements, university and college policies and procedures, and campus resources. Track students' progress towards major declaration.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Experience working closely and collaboratively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff. Excellent organizational skills, the ability to manage complex projects on a timeline and demonstrated ability to work independently. Demonstrated proficiency in using appropriate professional software and digital tools. Strong interpersonal skills, critical and creative thinking skills, sound decision making and objectivity. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, on occasion.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

• Master’s degree in Student Development/Educational Counseling or related field with demonstrated experience in student success initiatives preferred.

Physical Summary
  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,276 - $7,517 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 2 years with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
