Job Description

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Facilities, journey-person, and facilities mechanic, this position performs routine maintenance, alterations, and repairs of HRLA buildings. Respond to trouble calls involving simple repair or replacement involving a wide variety of tasks. Assist skilled journey-persons or maintenance mechanics of various trades with projects as needed. Operate, maintain, and make simple repairs on a variety of power or hand tools. Transport materials and personnel to and from job site, clean job site, return equipment, and follow all safety procedures. Assist Custodial Staff in moving and cleaning of furniture. Always follow all established safety procedures. Upon completion of work, clean-up job site and return equipment, materials, and tools.

Furthermore, this position is responsible for providing services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life, retention, and graduation rate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintenance & Repairs - Inspect and maintain appearance all facilities including public areas. Report damaged to building structures and surrounding areas to direct supervisor. Perform routine and unskilled maintenance, alterations and repair of campus buildings restroom fixtures using appropriate tools and equipment following all safety procedures.
  • General Tasks - Ensure the transport of materials, equipment, and personnel to and from job site expeditiously. Assist in gathering materials. Upon completion of work, clean up job sites and return materials, equipment, tools, and or radios to designated storage areas. Clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties, report damaged tools and equipment.
  • Administrative Tasks: Upon completion of work, clean up job site and return equipment, materials, tools, radios, pagers, and Kronos wands to designated storage areas.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise, and grammatically correct information. Basic writing skill sufficient to complete forms and job status reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend. Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Ability to work independently and/or assign crews and follow through on assignments. Working knowledge of standard safe work practices. Ability to inspect, lubricate, clean, adjust, and operate trade-related equipment and tools of the trade. Work cooperatively with Residence Life Team and be sensitive student’s suggestions and needs.

Ability to make sound judgment and report issues to supervisor. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Ability to work occasional weekend or evenings. Ability to multitask while maintain deadlines. Ability to report to work in a consistent and timely basis ready to perform job.

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to a high school diploma and a solid work history required.

• Experience working in higher education, student affairs, or Housing & Residential Life setting preferred.

Physical Summary

Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.

Licenses / Certificates

Valid California Driver’s License required to drive to various locations and deliver materials/supplies.

• Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $3,505 - $4,200 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,505 - $5,671 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
