Job Description

Position Summary

The Academic Advisor will serve as a staff member in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) assigned to the office of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. This position will provide equity-minded academic advising and critical support for an assigned caseload of the diverse student population in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts. The Advisor will focus on academic advising including major, GE, University, study abroad, transfer, and all graduation requirements, as well as supporting students with retention, probation, disqualification, unsatisfactory academic progress toward degree requirements, withdrawals, and similar student statuses. The Advisor will also support students holistically, such as connecting students to campus resources and facilitating initiatives to facilitate progression to degree.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on June 30, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) is one of eight instructional units of San Diego State University. The College is comprised of ten diverse departments and schools: the departments of Aerospace Studies, Military Science and Naval Science; the schools of Art, Design and Art History, Communication, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Journalism and Media Studies, Music and Dance, Public Affairs, and Theatre, Television and Film as well as ten research centers. The College is staffed by 49 positions comprised of administrative, clerical and technical staff in addition to approximately 260 tenured/tenure-track faculty and lecturers serving over 5,000 majors.

The Dean’s Office is responsible for the creation, implementation and continued support of the instructional, research, and development processes in the College.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Key Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of general advising practices.
  • Ability to use standard office computing tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google applications, email) and social media (Instagram, YouTube, etc.)
  • Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and coordinating programs and events.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to sensitive issues and situations in an academic advising context.
  • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing advising activities.
  • Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaborate with other faculty/staff in academic advising roles
  • Experience academic advising a diverse group of students along the academic spectrum including, promising students, students in the middle or high achieving students preferred.
  • Knowledge of a variety of academic disciplines, such as in PSFA, in terms of course requirements and career paths.
  • Demonstrated experience working with student academic records.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students.
  • Expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated academic advising experience in the diverse academic disciplines offered in Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,841 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,841 - $6,884 per month.
