Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Associate Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean of Student serves as the deputy Student Conduct Administrator for CSULB and assists in managing the operation of the Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development on student conduct matters. The department promotes the growth and development of students while protecting the interests of the larger community. Through the student conduct process, this position, educates students on their academic, civic, ethical, individual, and social rights and responsibilities as members of the University community. The Assistant Dean collaborates and develops rapport with various constituents throughout the campus and must demonstrate a high degree of independent judgment, reasoning, discretion, creativity, and integrity. The Assistant Dean in collaboration with the Associate Dean develops and/or updates university policies and procedures with respect to student rights, responsibilities, and compliance with state and federal laws as well as CSU system policies.

Expectations for the incumbent include: demonstrating thorough knowledge of models of equity and social justice, including training in cultural competency; strengthening current initiatives; working closely with campus partners to build effective and collaborative relationships that will maximize success in realizing institutional outcomes; and remaining focused on continuous improvement of the quality of student life programs and services by designing, implementing and administering campus-wide programs and services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life for all students. The Assistant Dean of Students will assist in supporting a holistic student learning environment, enriching student campus life and play a key role in our responsiveness to students in crisis through our CARES program. The incumbent will be well-versed in student development theory and equity frameworks and exhibit a high level of emotional intelligence.

Furthermore, this position is responsible for providing services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life, retention, and graduation rate. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigates and adjudicates all formal complaints against students under California Code of Regulations, Title 5, Section 91301 and 141302, as found in the CSULB REGS XVI and may be responsible for student organization discipline and addresses other conduct of concern.
  • Support the Beach XP Program - Assist with the creation, development, and implementation of educational, social, and emotional support activities and programming that are equitable, inclusive, and provides culturally appropriate services to serve students as assigned.
  • Advises the ASI Judiciary - Serve as the university representative to the ASI judiciary. Serve as a resource on campus policies and regulations for ASI student leaders.
  • Responsible for learning and maintaining Level 5 knowledge of Maxient, a student conduct management system - Maintains confidential database records of student conduct cases, providing regular reports to the Vice President, Associate VP for Student Affairs and the Associate Dean of Students including but not limited to, ongoing statistical reports, department annual report and system-wide audits.
  • CARES support of students to include possible committee participation when appropriate - Provides outreach, assessment, and appropriate referrals to currently enrolled students in need of non-academic support and intervention services. This process includes meeting with a number of students one-on-one who are referred to the CARES Team. Monitoring of the academic and personal progress for students of concern.
  • Design, implement and administer campus-wide programs and services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life for students.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Comprehensive understanding of CSU policies, procedures, and laws that impact judicial decisions, such as Title V, Sections 41301 and 41303 of the California Code of Regulations, CSU Executive Orders 1095 through 1098, and FERPA, is essential. Skills in mediation and alternative dispute resolution to handle contentious matters effectively. Knowledgeable about laws relevant to judicial decisions and adept at research, interviewing, and observation.

Basic understanding of student and faculty perspectives on academic issues in the classroom is necessary. Experience with Maxient is preferred to manage the student conduct system efficiently. Superior written and communication skills are crucial. Must be able to respond proactively to complex issues, developing strategic solutions, and handle confidential and sensitive incidents with composure, discretion, and respect. Ability to analyze complex reports, policies, and legal guidance to make accurate assessments and recommend strategies aligned with university goals is a key responsibility. Effective interpersonal skills that foster positive interactions within the campus community is required. Capable of producing clear, concise, and comprehensive written communications and reports.

Ability to multitask, prioritize effectively amidst changing deadlines, and exercise independent judgment with minimal supervision is necessary. Learning, interpreting, and implementing campus and system-wide policies, as well as developing a strong knowledge of relevant laws, is essential. Budget management skills are also important. Flexibility in working hours is needed to manage the department’s caseload efficiently. Must be adaptable to change and demonstrate patience with evolving expectations, such as work environment, responsibilities, assignments, and technology. A commitment to diversity, multiculturalism, and confidentiality is expected. Finally, the ability to work effectively and maintain cooperative relations with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and others is essential.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

• Master’s degree is required in higher education administration, public administration, law, social sciences, or a job-related field.

• Minimum of five (5) years of related experience.

• Experience in conduct resolution

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $6,500 - $7,500 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU MPP Compensation Summary Range: The MPP Comp Summary Range for this position is $6,286 - $9,429 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
