Description

Assists in planning and managing the activities of the Nassau County Library System in order to ensure the proper administration and provision of County Library Services. Prepares, presents, and maintains State Aid grant budget. Maintains positive rapport with the public and other agencies to foster a positive Library image within the community. Oversees daily operations at the main Library facility and supervises assigned Library staff. Supervises circulation staff at the main library and provides probationary and annual evaluations. Assists in creation of Library Long Range Plan; including scheduling community Focus groups and leading staff Focus groups. This position is not assigned by building or particular location and requires the flexibility to work at various library branches as assigned. Requires evening and weekend work.

Examples of Duties

  • Assists the Library Director with the responsibilities of planning and managing the activities of the Nassau County Library System.
  • Oversees daily operations at the Library’s main branch, to include managing the Reference, Non-Fiction and Local History Collections. Maintains reference materials, evaluates materials, recommends new materials and weeds collections on a regular basis..
  • Prepares, presents, maintains and submits all State Aid to Libraries grant program to include documentation and reporting; reviews with Library Director as required.
  • Assists in preparing, presenting and maintaining other departmental/branch budgets.
  • Designs and maintains a functional website for all libraries using a third-party web designer.
  • Assists in creating and implementing the annual plan of service and long-range plan, to include recommending technology plans for libraries for the improvement of Countywide Library services as required.
  • Supervises duties of assigned Library staff; supervisory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; recommending new employees; acting on employee problems and recommending employee transfers, promotions and discipline; reviews the work of subordinate staff for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers training, advice and assistance as needed.
  • Plans and coordinates all adult programs at the main Library.
  • Seeks and develops adult program opportunities for all Library branches; coordinates adult programming with all Friends of the Library (FOL) Groups.
  • Assists patrons applying for passports to include: scheduling appointments, interpreting passport policies, processing photographs, preparing passport transmittals; processing and mailing passport applications daily, etc.
  • Manages the Volunteer Program; interviews, selects, schedules and assigns duties and supervises volunteers for main library. This includes community and student workers. Maintains records of work performed.
  • Writes Library press releases promoting activities and services for newspapers, social media and web page. Posts press releases to Library website.
  • Schedules, oversees and prepares the use of the Library meeting room to include assisting with policy interpretations as needed.
  • Performs duties of Library Director in his/her absence, to include attending various County/City community meetings.
  • Receives and responds to public inquiries and complaints regarding Library programs and services.
  • Proctors tests for college students and professionals; instructs students and community groups on bibliographic information.
  • Serves as representative on the County Safety and Wellness Committees and actively participates in local, regional, state and national organizations as they relate to the Library.
  • Assists with developing Library policies and revising existing policies as needed.
  • Prepares, processes and submits various documents, including monthly and annual reports, newspaper/media releases, publicity materials, work orders, instructional materials, Annual Statistical Summary, departmental inventory, schedules, various other reports, memos, correspondence, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, subordinates, co-workers, County employees, Library patrons, volunteers/students and community service workers, vendors, professional peers, and the general public.
  • Performs circulation desk functions which may include but are not limited to shelving library materials; emptying book drops; preparing and recording daily newspapers. Balancing cash register. Accepting patron applications for library cards; receiving and processing requests from patrons for book reserves, interlibrary loans and new book purchases.
  • Acts as liaison with various groups, to include but not limited to, coordinating voter registration for State Library of Florida and the Amelia Island Genealogical Society.
  • Performs a variety of routine office duties as required, which may include but are not limited to typing reports and correspondence, entering computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment which may include a computer, printer, typewriter, scanner, microfilm reader, microfiche reader, audio-visual equipment, bar code scanners, fax machine, copier, calculator, telephone, etc.
  • Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and leave requests.

Typical Qualifications

Requires a Master’s Degree in Library Science accredited by the American Library Association and at least two (2) years of professional library experience, after completing the library education program. Must obtain and maintain annual certification with the Department of State as required to process passports with six (6) months of hire. Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.
