Major Duties

Under the general supervision of the Director of Environmental Health Safety, the Chemical Hygiene and Radiation Safety Specialist provides program leadership and technical expertise for Laboratory Safety by being involved in planning, implementing, and conducting a campus-wide Chemical Hygiene and Radiation protection program. The incumbent assesses performance and formulates compliance plans to meet current, developing, and future requirements for the University.
  • Serves as the campus Chemical Hygiene Specialist (CHS) and Radiation Safety Specialist (RSS) , ensuring safe handling and use of chemicals and radioactive materials within laboratories are conducted safely and in compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Maintains a university-wide radiation protection program and general surveillance of all controlled radiation activity on the campus.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain procedures for the safe use, storage, transportation, and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in physical science, life science, physics, nuclear engineering or related fields.
  • Equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible relevant experience in health, engineering, nuclear physics or a job-related field.
  • Experience in the area of laboratory safety implementation/support, radiation safety, occupational safety, or related fields at an academic institution preferred.
  • Master’s degree in physical or life sciences, physics, or engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of health physics and radiation protection; thorough knowledge of radiation dosimetry and the theory, methods and equipment used to measure radiation levels; general knowledge of the various parameters entering into the evaluation of radiological hazards and the biological effects of ionizing radiation in the laboratory use of radio isotopes; working knowledge of the State and Federal radiation control laws and codes; working knowledge of atomic and nuclear physics and chemistry and radioactive waste disposal techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to plan and conduct difficult and complex investigations of radiological health hazards; ability to analyze situations and take effective actions; ability to speak and write effectively.
  • Actively participates in research committees such as: Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and research grant approval board.


Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Classification/Grade: Radiation Safety Officer / 3801 /1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $5,822 - $8,000 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $5,822 - $10,532 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday; may include evenings and weekends. Serves as an on-call 24/7 emergency contact for incidents
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
  • The position is currently hybrid (4 days in office, 1 day remote); however, this is subject to change based on student and/or operational needs.
