    The Inmate Worker Crew Lead performs specialized detention work in providing supervision and training for inmate workers. Direct inmates in the proper operation of kitchen sanitation, commercial laundry operation, custodial services, and outside authorized landscape activities including light carpentry work, greenhouse and horticulture operations, sign engraving, facility snow management techniques, and special community project management. Additionally, work involves screening sentenced workers, assigning, supervising, training, and evaluating tasks of inmate workers completing various tasks both inside and outside the Sheriffs complex. Position is responsible for inspecting the work performed by inmate workers; maintaining inventory and purchasing supplies, materials, tools, and equipment ensuring accountability and safety of the inmate workers. Coordinators are responsible for maintaining sanitation compliance as directed by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) and proper tool and chemical inventories in compliance with the American Correctional Association. Coordinators are subject to the hazards of contact with jail inmates and detainees.

    Description:

    • Plan, assign, direct, supervise and coordinate inmate worker tasks, assignments, and schedules. Evaluate inmate workers performance, necessary training and the final work product. Supervise and direct Inmate Worker Crews engaged in completion of work assignments in several areas of operation located in and around the Sheriff ’ s complex as well as community projects as directed. Provide leadership by solving inmate worker disputes, assigning jobs, and issuing proper safety equipment and clothing. Provide informal counseling, conduct inmate escorting tasks, provide meals and breaks for inmate workers. Determine what safety equipment is needed. P rovide mandated on the job training to inmate workers enabling the successful completion of all work assignments. Provide remedial training when needed and recommend the discipline and/or discharge of incompetent workers. Constantly evaluate the work product and determine what training is required to successfully complete daily work assignments. Provide and document all training and work performance completed in the work unit.


    • Research products to use at the most cost-effective price needed in completing work assignments. Determine what statistical data needs to be updated, saved and filed in accordance with department policies and the American Correctional Association standards. Perform administrative functions: update Inmate Worker computer reports ; r espond to daily email and phone commu nications. Update daily inmate worker line inspection reports, daily chemical, tool, and equipment inventories. Correct inspection report deficiencies and update inmate worker training files. Document completed work assignments and capture unit statistical information for the Unit Monthly report. Conduct product research and obtain needed supplies and equipment in the work unit.


    • Attend v endor meetings, meeting with co-workers, supervisors, training seminars and classes, and unit meetings.


    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


    Starting Salary: $23.54/hr, $48,954.46 annually

    Hiring Range $23.54 - $27.28 based upon relevant experience

    Current Maximum Salary: $35.31/hr, $73,442.61 annually based upon time and merit increases.

    Preferred - 1 year of supervisory experience.

    Preferred - experience in commercial or industrial laundry operations, landscape maintenance and/or custodial service work.
