    Description

    The vacancy is in the Department of Public Works. Under general supervision, assists in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City buildings. Performs a variety of skilled plumbing and heating tasks and incidental maintenance and repair work in the related building trades. Installs new plumbing including pipes, valves, vents, drains and lines, and a variety of fixtures and equipment. Repairs and maintains existing facilities replacing damaged parts, valves, and washers, and cleans traps, drains, and lines. Installs steam and heating materials including valves, dials, traps, steampipes, and a variety of heating equipment. Repairs and maintains a variety of heating equipment and auxiliary steam equipment. Performs a variety of maintenance and repair work in related building trades. Incumbent(s) may be required to perform additional related duties. This is a 1716 Union position, and the hours of work are 40 hours a week.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    The examination will consist of rating of your training and experience as contained on your application and may also include a written test, an oral test or both. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination is designated to measure: Knowledge of the materials, tools, and techniques of the plumbing and heating trades; Knowledge of national and city plumbing and heating codes; Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the plumbing and heating trades; Ability to work independently from sketches, blue prints, and oral and written instructions; Ability to perform maintenance tasks in other related building trades; Ability to make time and materials estimates; Skill in the use and care of the tools of the plumbing and heating trades.

    Qualifications

    Open to all applicants who meet the following qualifications:

    Graduation from a standard high school, G.E.D, or vocational school AND Three (3) years of combined experience as a journeyman plumber and steamfitter.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a license as a journeyman plumber and steamfitter as issued by the State of Connecticut.

    A COPY OF YOUR DEGREE OR TRANSCRIPT MUST BE ATTACHED TO YOUR APPLICATION. A DEGREE OR TRANSCRIPT SUBMITTED WILL BE VERIFIED BY THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT.

    A COPY OF YOUR VALID STATE OF CONNECTICUT JOURNEYMAN PLUMBER AND STEAMFITTER LICENSE MUST BE ATTACHED TO YOUR APPLICATION.

    HARTFORD RESIDENCY PREFERRED: Preferably be a bona-fide resident of the City of Hartford at the time of application. A completed CITY OF HARTFORD RESIDENCY AFFIDAVIT including proof of residency as indicated on the RESIDENCY AFFIDAVIT may be submitted.

    If selected, you will be required to pass a physical examination administered by a city physician, a drug and alcohol screening, and a background check.
