    The Position

    Positions in this series supervise professional engineering associates, technical engineering staff, and/or engineering students; direct activities of assigned staff, organize personnel, equipment and materials, and delegate assignments; evaluate the performance of employees according to established policies and work performance standards; ensure accurate and timely completion of work assignments; and provide guidance and training.

    Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives.

    Assist the Resident Engineer (RE) in the planning, organizing, directing and overseeing the work and training of professional and technical employees engaged in surveying, inspection, office procedures and testing of materials incorporated into NDOT highway construction contracts. Assist the RE in maintaining and managing a construction field office, including files for documentation of contract progress, specification compliance, correspondence, and all other source documents related to the contract. Determine staffing needs for each project assigned, and coordinate with the RE to assure that staff requirements are met. Enforce contractor's adherence to established traffic control plans or NDOT's Standard Plans through direct and delegated supervision of placement and maintenance of traffic control devices, including nighttime jobsite inspections. Assist the RE in providing on-the-job training for all staff members in the field of construction engineering, surveying, inspection, materials testing and office procedures, in conjunction with their participation in formal training schools organized by the Construction Division. Communicate daily with staff personnel to address technical problem areas on the jobsite. Plans work activities to meet project/task schedules, budgets, costs, and baselines.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field and four years of professional engineering experience, two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; OR certified as an Engineering Intern and four years of professional engineering experience, two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; OR two years of experience comparable to the Staff II, Associate Engineer or Supervisor II, Associate Engineer; OR four years of professional engineering experience with two years of experience comparable to the Supervisor I, Associate Engineer. Special Notes Employees in this class who are not licensed professional engineers may not represent themselves as such to other persons or entities. Special Requirements Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
