The Performing Arts Technician III provides technical/specialist support for technical production, stage rigging, and scenery automation for the Department of Theatre and Dance productions. Oversees graduate students, student assistants, and student crew members who work in the areas of scenery construction, stage rigging, and scenery automation for the Department of Theatre and Dance productions. Special skills needed in the areas of advanced scenic carpentry metal scenery fabrication, stage rigging and scenery automation. In collaboration with other Performing Arts Technicians, performs periodic maintenance, inventories maintenance, and organization of scenic lab equipment, stage machinery, stage rigging equipment, scenery automation equipment and supplies in all performance, storage, work, and classroom spaces. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in theatre, dance, music, or business with a minimum of two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engage in applicable production specialty such as costume construction, lighting production, or sound and audio production.

Thorough and specialized knowledge and experience in applicable production specialty. Advanced knowledge of design theory and principles with the ability to translate design specifications, blueprints or drawings into costume, scene, lighting or sound production and effects. Ability to independently manage production support projects and productions by braking segments into working units that coincide with production needs. Ability to work on more complex projects and designs. Ability to work with more difficult materials and equipment, including the ability to select and use the most appropriate materials to meet production needs. Ability to use the more complex features of applicable software packages for the production specialty. Ability to plan the layout and use of work areas. Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to production support specialty and stage operations, as well as the ability to train others on safety measures to ensure compliance with codes and regulations. Comprehensive knowledge of historical regulations. Comprehensive knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to the applicable production specialty. Ability to work independently, multi-task, and prioritize production and department needs. Possession of time management skills with the ability to determine priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced production environment. Knowledge of the principles, methods and information related to performing support services. Possession of interpersonal communication skills, as well as knowledge of the materials and supplies related to curricular support and their uses. Ability to plan, organize, and schedule workflow.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Theatrical Technical Production. Knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to applicable production specialty. Knowledge and experience in all aspects of scenery construction including Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welder and advanced metal fabrication. Certified welder. Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Certified rigger. Ability to work at heights, lift a minimum of 70 pounds with or without accommodation. Basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.

License/Certifications

A Valid California Driver's License.
