Job Description

Position Summary

The Accounting Technician III must possess a comprehensive knowledge of financial record-keeping methods, procedures, and practices and a basic knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) with the ability to utilize considerable judgment, initiative, and independence in the classification, examination, and analysis of financial transactions to maintain the financial records for University funds. The incumbent will be responsible for preparing University non-student accounts receivable billings within the ASCOT system and for preparing associated reconciliations and reports. The incumbent will also utilize advanced analytical skills to prepare various reconciliations and perform other general accounting procedures.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Financial Operations organization is responsible for the financial and budgetary controls and procedures of San Diego State University (the University) and reports to the Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs through the Associate Vice President for Financial Operations. Financial Operations consist of Budget and Finance; Procure to Pay; Audit and Tax; and the University Controller's Office, which includes Accounting Services, Financial Reporting, Bursar's Office, Financial Systems Management & Analysis, and the SDSU Card Office.

Accounting Services is responsible for analyzing, reviewing, recording, and reconciling all transactional activity received from the sub-ledger modules into the general ledger.

Education and Experience

Education: Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Experience: Equivalent to four years of progressively responsible financial record-keeping experience.

Key Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of accounting principles and financial systems in higher education and/or public sector industries.
  • General knowledge of governmental accounting methods and related laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Experience in student or customer accounts preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,500 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,968 - $6,964 per month.
