Job/Department Summary:

Working independently, under general supervision, the Lead Building Service Engineer provides leadership in all facets to the Building Services Engineer(s) and Refrigeration Mechanic(s); giving work direction and training for the BSE/Refrigeration Mechanic staff and student employee staff, including the installation, operation, preventive maintenance and repair of mechanical systems related to heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, energy management, electronic controls, power, water and sewer systems and equipment as related to HVAC and/or Mechanical systems throughout University Housing. The Lead BSE is distinguished by the additional responsibilities of providing lead work direction to multiple and diverse journey-level crafts workers and semiskilled assistants, laying out and coordinating the work flow for jobs, and preparing materials lists and ordering supplies for jobs. The Lead BSE spends the majority of time working as a Building Service Engineer or in related HVAC trade while performing lead work coordination and project planning responsibilities for a work crew and typically is not overseeing the work of multiple work crews.

Incumbents typically prioritize and coordinate the work of a small work group or crew including providing direction for work sequencing and technical expertise and leadership; ensure necessary materials, supplies and equipment are available to complete assigned work orders and perform preventive maintenance; instruct staff on work and safety rules and ensure that they are observed; inspect work to ensure it meets quality requirements and specifications; provide input on performance evaluations; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and maintain computerized maintenance management systems, including accounting for labor, materials and purchasing, as well as prepare reports. On specific projects, work may involve coordinating with other departments and coordinating the work of other skilled crafts workers.

University Housing (UH) is a complex department consisting of approximately 60 employees working various shifts and providing diverse administrative and operational services across 6 residential halls and a 25 building apartment community.

Required Education and Experience:

Two or more years of experience as a journey-level Building Service Engineer or Refrigeration Mechanic that includes some work or project coordination responsibilities and lead experience.

Preferences:

Preference may be given to applicants with the following as they may be considered specialized skills:
  • Bilingual
  • 2 years of Recent, relevant experience working as a Building Service Engineer.
  • Recent, relevant experience installing and maintaining commercial HVAC Systems.
  • Recent, relevant experience operating energy management systems related to HVAC equipment.

Time Base: Full-time- 1.0

Pay Plan: 12/12

Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 7:00am-3:30pm, Summer - Mon-Thurs 6:00am-4:30pm.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $81,444 - $103,272 per year.

Current certification as an EPA Universal Technician must be maintained throughout employment in this position, for the use and disposal of compressed refrigerants.

Throughout employment in this position incumbent must maintain a valid California Driver's License as well as continued completion and compliance of the CSU Defensive Driver's Training course.

The successful candidate might be required to pass a post-hire respiratory Medical Evaluation.
